What's the difference between the different color markers? I see some containers marked as yellow and some as white. What do the different colors indicate?

White ones belong to you or your corp, yellow ones belong to someone else. If you attempt to steal from a yellow one, you will be marked as aggressive and the owner can come after you (even in high-sec). The same also applies to wrecks.

Where this is usefull is in a busy belt, with lots of miners. Keeps you from making yourself a theif when you don't want to be one. If you mistakenly try to open a yellow container or wreck, I think you still get a warning message....... _________________________________

White Container - Safe to loot, you will not get Agression Timer (meaning that you, corp, gang created the container/wreck/etc.)
Yellow Container - Not Safe to loot, you will get Agression Timer and the owner/creater of that container can attack and destory you without getting concord intervention for the length of the timer. (meaning that someone else created the container/wreck/etc and it "belongs" to them.)

How reliable is the white/yellow difference?
I swear I have gotten looting warnings from white containers.

So if I loot a yellow marker, does the owner get notified? If they can come after me for only a few minutes, what prevents me from running away until the timer is gone? What if they are offline? I must be missing something here...

Yes and no.
Yes they get notified and no, you aren't missing anything. However, you should remember that even if you get away unscathed, your reputation won't and that may be more important than the loss of a ship.

The overview is sometimes buggy. Don't rely solely on it. Those warning boxes are usually more accurate.
You can always Show Info on a container and see what pilot owns it, and what corp they belong to.

They get notified in the sense that if they see you in space (ie on the overview) you'll be blinky red to them. They won't get an aggression counter unless they shoot you, thus if you steal without their knowing, they won't know it was you.
Thus if you loot then hide for 15 minutes, you'll get off scot-free.

That means the player has a bounty on his head and is useuley (but not allways) an indication that the player might be a pirate, bountys can be collected by killing the players pod, though normal agression rules apply, ie: you can't fire on him in high security space. -

Unless they have a sec status of under -5 which will make them blinky red.
Good rule to follow, any blinky red person can be shot. However, once you have agressed, they are allowed to fight back...

Does my security rating get hurt? Will CONCORD come after me?

No, neither, the only risk you take is that for 15 minutes the owner OR member of the same player created corp of the wreck or can will be able to fire on and possabley distroy your ship.
Well that and a possable dent to your reputation, but thats probaley not a huge concern for most -
