Hi all, I was just wondering if there will be an expansion to EVE in the near future. (hoping to get a direct answer for CCP on this one as well)
Thanks all.

From what I understand they will keep releasing big patches for the orignal game with no extra costs of a reall expansion. So my best guess is nope. -------- -The only real drug problem is scoring real good drugs

I think big content patches are better than retail expansions, saves time, hassle and money for all concerned.
On the other hand if they do an expansion it'll probably be related to the jovians or contact back with earth. Fingers crossed.

paraphrased from hellmar: We much prefer to release update patches rather than expansion packs. One reason for this is with a single environment, it would be very difficult to have customers running multiple game versions.
so.... pretty much a no, unless they did decide to setup a second environment, then things might change. ___________________________________________ Join in the NEW Sci-Fi Quiz |

Edited by: Varia on 11/02/2004 15:16:11 Long Answer:
I sure there will be, as it is now eve universe is getting smaller almost every patch. Sure there will be patches to solve bug fixes, new contents, more bug fixes to rectify the last new content, even more content etc but in the end that wonÆt bring new players to Eve. To do that CCP would need to resell Eve back to us in the form of shiny new expansion game box, Eve III ôAlien Space Menaceö etc. which is effectively a very large patch (maybe some new hardware) that gives CCP the chance to A: gain more players & B: make another ú29.99 for each upgrade sold.
To solve the multiple game versions, you just have special Star gates that take you (with the expansion) to the new areas.
Short Answer: Yes

Edited by: Lomex on 11/02/2004 15:37:27 Interview with Hellmar by Warcry
"Warcry: Will future enhancements to the game be delivered, for the most part, as day-to-day additions to the game, or are you planning a collection of world-altering enhancements in a bundle and offering it as an expansion for purchase?
Hellmar: As you have seen with Castor, we have already patched in something that others might have sold as a separate expansion. As EVE players all inhabit one very dynamic game world, it is difficult to have players with different versions of the client playing together in that same world. Due to this, we are bound to release most expansions as patches. It doesnÆt mean that we wonÆt eventually produce a new boxed version, but we are likely to offer the contents of such a box to existing customers, also."

*theres no WAY they could have sold this as an expansion, seriously?* ___________________________________________ Join in the NEW Sci-Fi Quiz |

Go to EveDB and you'll see up to tech 5 listed. took about nine months to reach tech 2. So, if the game continues as it has tech will reach 5 in 27 months. Don't really see much need for a new game expansion till then. Stellar Products and Quality Resources ticker: SPQR established 6-03

Sony added 2 new vehicles, 3? new guns and a few caves to planetside and called it an expansion for $40 .. as far as I know everyone has to have the same patch (so you have it installed wether you've bought it or not) you just cant use the new things unless you pay them ..
I still dont think CCP could have sold castor as an expansion though .. people tend to expect to get access to new stuff from expansions quickly .. rather than 6 months for it to be rolled out .. that and 80% of the castor feature list by there PR department are actually bugfixes (EG : new drone skills .. when they just fixed the scout drone to do what it always supposedly did)
I believe they've said before if they added an expansion it would probably be planet surfaces .. it also fits in with the above bit about only 1 environment making it difficult to support two versions .. planets you just cant land on without the expansion solves that
. ----- Apologys for any rambling that may have just occurred.

Edited by: Tigrana Blanque on 11/02/2004 16:21:41 I can think of an easy way to do an 'expansion'.
The expansion is a new region of space (perhaps a new wormhole like the original 'eve' one opens up) which requires specialized skills and equipment to reach. One's account must be 'tagged' as having bought the expansion to authorize purchase and training of skills and equip, and the wormhole shows up for 'everyone' but can only be navigated by those so tagged, trained, and equipped.
Gives you a good reason for an expansion pack, a nice set of things you could include (new space could have new and different alien enemies, maybe its located near some variation in space (galactic core) where the laws of space are somewhat altered, so equipment which works there is useless outside of that region, and gives u built in *advertisement* in the main server that the expansion is there to be bought.
Not that I'm arguing I *want* CCP to play mercenary games with us. Just pointing out it could be done.

My original interpretation of what Hellmar said in that Warcry interview was that they would repackage EVE with a new box, documentation, etc. Then they would MARKET it as an expansion to outsiders (i.e., people without accounts) thus the box would be like "EVE-Online Expansion: Rogue Beetles from P3EN-E" or something...
BUT you wouldn't have to buy two versions of the game, and the expansion would be freely available to existing subscribers as a downloadable patch. Essentially, sounds like a marketing ploy for new customers but without placing the burden on existing customers to buy a new "expansion pack."

dont think direct expansions to eve will ever work
but what ccp could do is continue with the eve francise, create new games that revolve around the eve universe sinace after all it is an amazingly well thought through world.
For example, they could license the Halflife2 engine or the UT2003 engine and build a game around where you are a minmatar slave fighting against the oppression, or you could play an Amarrian soldier who is fighting for the survival of the empire. On that note it could use the same engine as Star wars Kotor and be an rpg.
The possibilities are endless.

that would be more practical, actually, you wouldn't even call it an expansion but just release it as a brand new EVE with all the extra options. That should draw new players instead of having to buy the base game and the "expansion"...............but we've got a long way to go yet....
also, besides jove space, anybody ever notice that big mass of space in the top right corner beside the polaris region?? wonder what that's going to be ______________________________________________ Hellmar > sorry for the attitude, playing a n00b character through the current state just left me a bit bitter dev chat: Mar 18, 2004

Lucas,
It is a new "pirate race." Not sure exactly what it's all about but it is in the EVE lore, you can read about it on the website There are two races that aren't really in the game yet, Joves and the pirate race . . . sounds to me like it will be a lot of fun down the road

CCPS patches are a hybrid between bug fixes (your classical patch) and expansion packs (just ccp's are free and mandatory).
This imo is a good thing. You've paid for a game and normally don't mind paying for expansion packs, but eve is different. You pay monthly for the up keep of servers, work of gm's and extra development/content from the devs.
Paying for expansion packs would be a very strange way to go and one I really do not beleive ccp will ever do.
IMO Eve will run its course with their set story line, maybe player numbers allowing, it might overrun that story arc and a new one be worked in.
But in the end, assuming the game is seen as a success in ccp's eyes, I'd imagine we'll see an EVE 2 or something very similar. With the amount of experience ccp are getting from running their first mmog it would make sense to put that experience into another mmog.
But then I'd say that would be a few years off + dev time. I'm just content with eve as it is now :) Things are finally been fixed that have bugged me for a long time gameplay wise, and theres more on the horizon :)

I bet that pirate race is just some long lost minmatar tribe who ran out of clown make-up.
