This would be a simple thing to implement and hugely useful: the ability to export an entire overview configuration to a file, and obviously the ability to import to match it.
This option would contain all the data from Filters, Appearance, Columns, Ships and Misc in overview settings, but NOT the overview size and shape data.
The reason this idea came to me was the bug with the collapsed overview where it is not possible to expand one of the sections due to it being hidden behind another - this can only be reset by ditching your user_xxx.dat file, which conveniently trashes all of the overview settings as well.

I fully support this idea, after having to redo all my overview settings and stuff I really like the idea to be able to backup my settings...

Simple - copy 'settings' folder in your cache. Done :)

Wrong. With the bug I described, when you copy the file that contains your overview settings, the bug is copied as well. In addition, that file is login specific and cannot be shared with anyone else. The feature I suggested would allow you to share a complex overview setup that is time consuming to complete with many people, saving them a lot of time going through tedious lists.

This is the kind of extremely useful feature that will never see the light of day.
It would be an awesome new feature to include in the trinity engine, something that tons of people would use, and that would make everyone's lives easier.
Having said that, CCP want people to be able to walk around in stations, because apparently that's important in an internet spaceships game.
Dev time has to be spent wisely on new features that won't be used, but will look fancy. F10 system map anyone?

Well, the idea of a backup is ofcourse that you do it before things go kaka. So copy it now and each time you change things and when the bug hits, copy the backup back.

That still doesn't make it possible to exchange it with anyone else. Also I'm sure when I tested, restoring an older user.dat file over the top had some issue with it and I'll test that again later since I can't remember what happened.
