Jesus, don't even think about changing Local. There is nothing wrong with it. The whole PVP is centered around local, everyone's used to it, it's a significant part of the game. Making people's names invisible in Local would massively change the game in pirates' favor, who have the advantage of fitting for ganking and the ability to choose their fights.
In fact, compared to other MMORPG's, Eve's PVP works remarkably well because of Local as an automatic early warning system, giving the carebears the choice of either seeking safety or taking the risk. Changing it would markedly change and imbalance the game.
Please don't fix what isn't broken, but instead, do something about the increasingly intolerable fleet combat lag instead.

If youÆre a pirate and you enter a system, you find a belt with a ratter in, and then the next thing you know 30 people jump in the belt with you and kill you.
If you had local you would maybe not have engaged, so it may put people of pirating as it will be much easier to set traps etc.
I personally am against changing local, I think its fine as it is. If anything add a filter to local, so in crowed systems such as Jita/Rens etc you can filter through gang members, good standing pilots, bad standing pilots, war targets etc kind of like the over view settings but for local chat as well.

Edited by: Ath Amon on 09/09/2007 20:11:08 actually i will like to see names in local go :P
but sure there will be the need of a way to "monitor" system traffic....
maybe a sort of "radar" pos with many AU of radar range, or smaller structures "sort of radar bubbles" can work for that, allerting the alliance who have sov that some unknow ships are entering in a certain system or moving in it
actually it can open new possibilities with allianced placing radar stations of different strenght and radius vs pirates that try to avoid to get caught and maybe hijack such stations
it could also bring in different sensor types and ways to use them like active and passive ones

Unfortunately, rather than address the slot layout/tanking issues for Minmatar the Devs have simple declared that it makes us "versitile".

i agree, local is for carebears, if you want to be good at the game dont depend on local, itd make fleet engagements more interesting, itd stop the whole local smack issue, itd make things random and not predictable, itd hamper 1 day old alts at SS scanning gates and itd stop isk farmers!!!! --------------------------

Sure, if what you like to do in Eve is to hunt carebears and would get to do it with (more) impunity, then what's not to like about it. But I don't think the devs have thought that cunning plan all the way through.
Why would anyone even bother to mine or rat, instead of being the cool guy who's hunting carebears? There would be a hell of a lot less miners and ratters to hunt to begin with, and those who keep doing it, would start keeping a small army of cloaked alts at the gates and potentially automation, or flat out cheats to replace the functionality of local as is. The effect on the economy would be massive, and I don't think all the cool PVP gankers would be happy either, seeing that there wouldn't be many people dumb enough left to PvE for money under such conditions.
Local as it is, as a red light early warning system warning of a potential danger nearby, giving the carebear a choice of getting out or taking the risk, is actually something EVE does right compared to many MMORPGs which lack such mechanics. On the other hand PvP kills in EVE have far larger consequences, which also really makes it much more necessary.

Leave local alone. I dont need to waste even more time searching empty systems.
