September 1st marked a triumphant victory for the pirate scum of the eve universe, as a single pilot destroyed an Obelisk in empire with a solo Battleship. There was close to four billion isk worth of precious items in its cargo hold, which included many capital ship parts, weaponry, and starships. Most of these items were destroyed in the explosion, but the pirates did manage to recover some of the items, including salvaging the freighter thereby making it a successful operation. It is true that one man got the kill, but the fact is it was a very tight operation with many players involved, and many hours spent testing the theory. Over all it was one man's dream achieved.
The operation involved a six man team. The most important role was the cargo scanner. He determined the contents of the freighterÆs cargo hold and relayed that information to the team, thereby ensuring an empty freighter wasnÆt targeted for the kill. Once the target was spotted three pilots were in "Bumper" ships. Their job was to bring the freighter to a stop, and then move the freighter away from the jumpgate. It was previously believed that the sentry gun range was 250KM. With testing it was determined that the actual range was about 168KM in a 0.5 system. Although they didnÆt know that at the time the bumpers spent three tedious hours moving the freighter into position 250KM away from the jumpgate. Then once everyone got back from eating snacks and finishing pints another pilot would create a reason for Concord to spawn by attacking something close to the jumpgate. This would make it so "The Hitter" had a huge gap between him and the Concord Battleships. Once Concord took the bait "The Hitter" made his move in a solo Dominix. The pilot, using six drone link augmenters, sent five tech two Orges 160KM towards the target. The Dominix had a cap intensive setup allowing it to withstand the CONCORD assault long enough for its drones to kill the freighter; so there was a hauler close by to drop Cap Booster Charges. Once the Freighter was destroyed another pilot in a Freighter warped in to scoop the undamaged items. Concord eventually deals with the Dominix, but it's too late for our friend in the Obelisk. He suffered a massive AFK death.
CCP was quick to react to the incident. It seemed there was a problem with CONCORDÆs short range warp capability. Instead of warping right to their targets, they would slow boat the whole way there. Now, to our dismay, CCP has corrected the problem. If this operation is copycatted, CONCORD will de-spawn and warp on top of the hitter, and the CONCORD Battleships will deal him a quick death. So for now, freighters are once again safe in empire. Until we think of something else...

Could always do whart Outbreak did to BoB... about 20 BS at a gate, then when the freighter jumps into system everyone wail on it and it pops in under 5 seconds

This has been around for a bit, I think this is the first time for it to succesfully happen though, I tried it around a month ago in a Nanovexor, in Jita, he had 10% structure till he came back from being afk, had around 15b in cargo aswell =/

I find it more amusing that you went to this length to solokill a freighter and didn't even know how sentries work 
For future reference, it's 150km from the object it's guarding exactly.

Unless you are in 0.6 or higher in which case its 250km (tested)
Frankly since concord responds in 0.5, and the sentries in high sec had been boosted we just assumed they had been boosted in 0.5 as well.
Go figure.

I figured this one out year(s) ago. What you did wasn't an exploit because the ship was eventually lost to concord but I actually managed to save a ship from concord altogether. It was just a test frigate but in theory could have been used to save a dominix. Good thing they finally gave concord a short-range warp but to be honest it took them long enough.

Thanks for putting a smile back on my face after a rubbish morning at work! I reckon that anyone who values their freighter/cargo so little that they'd go afk for that long deserves all they get! Nice kill though, not often you get a killmail with 2 ships destroyed on it

They used to with sentry drones, which is how I could kill a transport with one BS (myrm could do it now). Those were the days....

The sentry guns operate 150km from the object they're guarding in 0.5 or less. In 0.6 or more the guns operate at an "unspecified range" which is generally the 250km ceiling.
I agree I don't have the features to be a holoreel star.
Most people have missed the point that this is Mobsters Online and that carebears are at the bottom of the foodchain. |
