Hmmm...while I understand Marcus's initial response <anger at someone taking something he claims as his without fear of retribution>, I guess I just don't understand the uproar. I look at the available options if I don't want to buy a secure container while mining in secure space.
Option 1, Solo Mining.
My mining ship has a hold, albeit a small one. This hold is secure to everything but the destruction of my ship. If that occurs, Concord will respond to defend me, not the thief.
Since this is secure space, the odds are there is a station in the system I am mining. When the hold is full, I warp, dock, dump...then back out to the asteroid, which I marked. I lose very little in this action, other than the minor inconveniance of docking, which with practice, requires very little time.
Option 2 - Strip Mining in Secure Space
Here I see the benefit of a jettisoned cargo container...3 to 4 miners working in a group, all dumping to the same container, with another party in an indy hauling to the station regularly. At the end of the run, the benefits are split. Constant hauling from a Jettisoned container leaves some ore at risk while the Indy is at the station dumping, but any losses here should be minimal. Obviously this works best with Corp mates, but solo artists can band together also, I mean even thieves have mates to work with.
Option 3 Mine Solo, jettison the ore, and if a thief approaches, try to come to a business agreement with them.
I had a case where a cruiser was siphoning my can, rather than becoming belligerent I made a deal with them. I ended up with them hauling Ore to dock and we split at the end of the session. I stayed out mining full time without interuption which offset a good part of the split since this system required two jumps for me to hit the station. Since then, that person has never touched my cargo can again.
This last scenario of course is probally an exception, rather than the rule, and as a practice, I don't normally mine this way (The container is unsecure). Still, can't hurt to talk to them before becoming Irate.
If CCP did not offer a secure method of holding ones ores, then yes I see a problem. But they do, and in truth, more than one method is available. Yes they require more effort or socialization with fellow players on your part, but the method is there, so why then be angry when someone does come siphon off that unsecure can that you just can't be bothered with to haul until it's full?
Now in 0.0 space...well then it is a different matter altogether.
