Hi I want to become a miner. I know ratting and missioning etc. is worth more money now but I like to be able to play in the background. I'm hoping to have 1 miner char and 1 hauler char who will also be able to take out the rats in 0.5 systems with another ship.
Thing is, though I know how mining works, I don't know what to mine for. I want to stay in high-sec so I don't have to worry, but what's the best ore to go for? Minimising hauler runs would be good coz I want my other char as close as possible for rats, but also what makes the most money? People tell me that prices of different mins change all the time, so it's hard to know which ore is best.
Which is the best high sec or at the moment for 1) minimal hauling 2) price?
I'm sorry if it's a hard question, but it's hard to work it out...

Are you just selling ore or refining?
Im favoring plagioclase and/or kernite in high sec currently due to the price rise in mexallon. Last time I checked it was breaking 35 a unit.
If your just going to sell ore then try to find a trade hub you can easily move the ore to and grab the prices from there to guide your choice.

I think I'll probably refine it coz then it's easier to ship it to the trade hubs?

Also if you havent already.. train up refineey efficiency to level 4 and the ore specific processing skills to level 3 and you will have no waste on a 50% high sec refinery giving you max return for the ore you mine/refine!

Which ore to mine depends on which region of space your in
Kernite is Amarr
Pyroxeres is Caldari
Omber/Plagioclase is Gallente/Minmatar
Veldspar/Scordite is found in all 4 regions
So depending on where you are Scordite is your 2nd or 3rd choice ore
(the beltrats in hisec systems arent really an issue, 5 light t2 drones are more than enough)

Aim to get in a hulk and 5 T1 Combat drones, they munch rats up no problem, get your haulier in a Itty the MK3 is nice (i have a Mk5 better)you got 2 high slots one for a tractor beam and the other for a salvager so your hulk mines and kills rats and your haulier loots the wrecks, Tank the Itty with Medium shield and rechargers, same for the hulk, then enjoy you life as a miner....

In Gallente space where I hang out thanks to my corp I find that Omber is the best bet. Isogen (one of its big components) goes for around 80 Isk a piece and it gives alright amounts of Pyrite and Trit. But you will have to mine a lot of any high sec ore to see big money.

If you want to stay in high sec, this will get you down to 0.5 security with ease. If you want to go into low sec, then this setup is OK, but you'd better be on your guard for PvP pirates. I managed 0.3 sec in a retriever with 5 combat drones, until player pirates ruined my ship and my day......I now mine in 0.0 with my corporate mining group.
Also - by running some missions for the corp whose station you're refining in, you'll lower the refining tax from 5%. You can get all the way down to 0% tax with a standing of +6.67.
