Can any one advise of the best way to mine solo using a thorax? I am looking for best layouts for .5 space and below and if I should use secure cans or just jettison and pick up the can in stages?

Well - in answer to your questions...
1)Use the Thoraxs main benifit to protect yourself - heavy drones. In .4 and below you will encounter Cruiser NPCs, usually supported by about 5-6 Frigate NPCs (the nastiest I have encountered was a 2 Cruiser 4 Frigate spawn in which all the Frigates were lobbing missles at me).
2)You are asking for trouble if you mine without a secure can. There are plenty of ore thieves about and there is bugger all you can do about it in .5 space. In .4 space you can shoot em but you will take a sec hit for it.

you can put 5 miner 2's on a Thorax. Just load the low slots with co-processors.
Equip your drone hold with Hammerheads, they are well suited for .5 security system Rats.

Ah, yeah right, maybe if you have 10 of them! Ive lost four in a go in .7 systems.

I used to mine in .5 with a thorax with 5miner 2's and used infiltrators for my drone. Occasionally a spawn that was to big for my drones would appear and I would loose em.
But now I have 5 wasps/ogres instead so I am never threatend
