Edited by: Dronefragger on 11/09/2007 21:53:29 Because yelling at them and making them feel like the whole community hates them isn't going to help in any way towards getting the server back up or getting rid of the crashes at all. Even if they just put the server back up right now somehow to stop you all moaning, in 20 minutes or so you'd all be whining again because whatever they didn't fix just caused you to die. Server crashes and the server being taken down happen for a reason you know.
Edit:
Just realised the server is now up, but this is still relevent for future crashes.

That, and the fact that it's really unlikely that CCP are reading the forums right now, while they have serious server problems. [-------------------------------------------------] Tears stream behind my visor, but eyes look unblinking at the world |

Bullsh*t they do listen to us, they notify us if something goes wrong. EVE isn't the only game to go with hiccups so STFU.

And you not using your smarts, and actually thinking for a second that, oh wait, EVE-TV has NOTHING to do with the EVE-Online network and programming team, is smart?

And what would you have me do in the meantime? Play Freelancer. I did that too but got bored of hearing eve players whine on the Hamburg server (feel free to join me there in let's say 5 minutes?)
Besides why not dish out my anguish at CCP? This whole server crash is THEIR FAULT!!!

Yes, lets blame FAULTY HARDWARE on CCP, who could of done NOTHING to detect it before hand. ---

I happen to have some experience doing tech support, running setting up networks and servers, even upgrading and I tell you no company I ever dealt with EVER used hardware before on crucial systems (be them servers or even security) without testing it thourougly.

Testing's all fine and dandy, but if you do indeed work in the industry, you should know that hardware can just go topsy turvy with little to no warning. They've never had a problem with their RAMSAN's before, so this leads me to believe this is one of those random incidents. ---

Actually, they could quite possibly have done. Monitoring of hardware, networks and apps is prestty sophisticated. And since, I would imagine a degree of redundancy/failover has been built in to the architecture, this is possible a fairly major failure involving, possibly, a number of system components - the fault description provided may not actually be a true indication of the failure. might even be a hack attempt and a resulting dropped dmz

What notification did CCP issue for the last 4 crashes in the last 22 hours? I might not be on their email list - what warning or announcement did you get?

Servers crash that much is true. Hardware goes haywire. That's why you use SERVER CLUSTERS. In case of hardware failure the other servers take over. This is called FAILOVER.

You must have no idea how EVE works... They can't just purchase a dozen RAMSAN's - they cost a ****ton, and they need the permission of the US army to ship the things outside of the US every time. At this moment in time, I think they have three, each doing their bit. Losing access to one is not a small thing, and cannot be ignored.
TQ's already a super-cluster, by the way. It's ranked in the top 200 super-clusters in the world today. ---

The thing is, they are the ones responsible for the servers so if it crashes its their fault :P
Eitherway, they should compensate our accounts with the lost payed-time due to their messups!

Thats why it isn't a sudden crash, you'll see lots of lag and a system or two get traffic advisories, and as the extra load is pushed over to less blades, they begin to be overloaded and its like a domino effect.
Edit: Starting up: 8 minutes and 10 seconds.

In my opinion, for what it is worth, I think that CCP do a brilliant job. They are running a service that is typically available 23 hours as day, 7 days a week. OK, there tend to be issues around patch time. However would everyone prefer a stale game with no enhancements? If everyone spent as much time testing the builds on the test server as they did moaning when there was a problem they may be alot less. I for one beleive that the amount of enjoyment that I get out of playing far outways the annoyance of the ocasional problem like tonight. OK - that said I am a little anoyed that my mining op was interupted however it has done me a favour in a way as I will get an early night (relatively) and on that note..........

While I won't sit here and nitpick about my time being comped (I really don't think the 62 cents worth of downtime is enough to riot over) I haven't heard ANYTHING from CCP since the last series of crashes.
Also, you have to figure that they run these features pass through development testing, then a testing server, then another testing server. While those don't hold the same capacity that TQ does, they should still be pulling bugs of this size out before they hit production. Someone else (don't remember who) on a different board said it best - "We aren't paying to beta test CCP's code"
To add to this, the servers are taken down for one hour every day to perform maintenance. This is when they're supposed to take care of hardware/database maintenance to prevent problems like this. Obviously something's going wrong.
If it was just the patch, I wouldn't be as upset, but this was happening before the patch. They decided to release the patch while major existing flaws were occurring.
The crisis management team is **** poor and a failure to communicate with their clientel seems to be their biggest problem. Anybody who runs a business will tell you that if you don't talk to your customers when you have a problem, that problem will only compound.
CCP - this is a phenomenal game. The design, expansion and creativity that goes into this game is unbelievable, and I applaud you for it. Please take care of the things that are broken before you continue though.
