what gives, how much downtime is normal in a typical week?

There is 1 hour downtime each day for server backup or somethin, they do any fixes needed etc then.
The downtime we have seen today though has been due to tech issues with the servers. It allways happens when there is a new patch, but CCP will be doing there best to get these issues sorted.
Its crap but we just have to grin and bear it as there is nothing we can do apart from hope that CCP weill iron out these bugs asap.

I'm fairly new to this game as well but it sounds like this isn't exactly normal.
I'm sure they'll get it sorted out eventually.

As said above, normally 1 hour per day for scheduled upkeep of the game. This is VERY rare to have crashes like this. Hopefully they will work out all the bugs and things will be running again soon, remember, EVE is a game, a form of entertainment. If it crashes, just try to find something else constructive to do. For example, I did my laundry for the first time in months!

For those new to the game (still on trial), I'd hold onto your money till they get this stuff sorted out. CCP is generally pretty good, but lately things have been really rough. If you've already paid for your account, stick with it, it's an amazing game when it does work, but I'd tell your friends to hold off for a little bit before jumping into this.
