I just bought a new gaming pc and I need some advice on what game(s) to get for my new beastie.
I'll probably get BioShock & Supreme Commander...but what else can you recommend? (Please no sports games)

Have you played Eve yet?
F.E.A.R is probably the scariest game I've ever played, still do and love it Some arcade online FPS that are nice and a little heavy on the machine are Battlefield 2 and BF 2142.
Hello Kitty Online is big...

I'd highly recommend Bioshock. Possibly one of the best FPS I've ever played. Light is faster than sound... this is why some people appear bright until you speak to them... |

World in Conflict if you like RTS (and yes the game actually does look like in that video). Game hit stores on Tuesday I believe. There is a demo available as well to try it.
Bioshock for just pure graphical awesomness as well as one of the best FPS in a long, long while. F.E.A.R. is great as well.
And Baldur's Gate is not something to make a spiffy new PC shine as it is a bit dated but have to agree it is a fantastic game.
You also might try Elder Scrolls: Oblivion. That one will give your PC a workout (very good looking) and many, many dozens of hours of gameplay.
EDIT: Black & White 2 can also look very nice. Kind of a peculiar game though so not sure if you'd like it (I enjoyed it). You can probably find it at a reduced price these days.

F.E.A.R Scary. I did the first level, then uninstalled it . Incidentally, I also gave it a bash on a crappy laptop with all the graphics set to bare minimum, and I was still too scared. Its the damn music and background sounds.
Battlefield 2142 Great game, lots of fun. I hear the game play itself is not as good as BF2, but I also hear there's less ******s too. i.e. you won't get dive bombed by 5 fighter-bomber every time you break cover. Titan mode is the coolest thing ever. Starship Troopers (book) style drop-pods anybody? I'm "Pandarian". Usually on Australian servers, Internode or Game-arena ones. Oh, and unlike CS, the sniper is not insta-pwn. Yay.
Company of Heroes Great game. Small squad tactical RTS rather then a generic roll-across-the-map-with-20-mammoth-tanks. The squad based unit control works very well, and finally we have AI which automatically runs behind nearby cover instead of standing in the open getting shot. One of my fav games, very good for LANs. Computer AI is excellent for going against comps too; its perfectly feasible to lose at normal-difficulty.
SupCom I don't really like this much. Its a decent game sure, and its fun seeing an army roll across the map before getting squished by a bigger army, but it offers nothing new. It seems the game favors getting a huge army and rolling over the enemy, or rushing tech and nuking them. You also can't feasibly do both, so if your huge army doesn't win, you're in deep deep trouble. Computer AI is craptacular.
Oblivion Great concept, but implementation is weak. Download "Oscuro's mod" to get much needed improvements. You can also get a bunch of other mods which are also very cool and highly recommended, esp stuff that increases difficulty. While graphics are stunning and combat is great fun (assassin type char all the way), it feels generally less epic then Morrowind. I still like Morrowind more. Now if somebody could import Morrowind into the Oblivion engine, I wouldn't log onto EVE for a year. Seriously.
Must haves Crysis Assassin's Creed. Maybe World in Conflict. The Demo was fun, although it seemed tactically shallow. Has potential though.

YOU CANT DO BOTH??? Of course you can!! you roll across the map from 3 different angels using big battleship and carriers for ocean support all the while sending in larger units from water (amphibious) or in front of/behind the army in the air, firing artillery support and brining down enemy shields, all the while you use nukes to destroy any vulnerable enemy positions, obviously scouting with spy planes and using air superiority fighters to protect your different bomber squadrons, (carpet bombing, surgical strikes and pin point attacks)
Supcom is about scale, the more you build the more you can build.
Not for everyone, just thought i would correct that small point, the ai isnt that important, only used it to learn how to play, online games and cash prize tournies are where its at. -------------------------------------------- Stay away from my signature all of ya!!! IM WARNING YOU!!

Well *I* think SupCom is bloody fantastic.
For Oblivion, yes, mod it to hell, get the improved textures, the menu mods, Obscuro's Overhaul mod, and twiddle the prefs to make sure you don't load more map every 7 footsteps. The engine is seriously full of suck.
As for games to play, which will tax the machine, there's always S.T.A.L.K.E.R., that hasn't been mentioned yet.

For single player you may be correct. My mind is still not made up on that yet. But for multiplayer you couldn't be further from the truth. WiC is perhaps one of the best tactical RTS games I have ever seen. No cruddy zerg here. And believe me, on a team that works well, defends points appropriately, spends TA wisely, uses scouts and so on will crush those who just wander about pew pewing.
Besides...there is just something so damn satisfying about dropping a heavy artillery barrage right on top of 5 infantry squads or having your helicopters come on some undefended heavy artillery or have some enemy helicopters back away from a fight right over your waiting AA (to name just a few...got to toss my first nuke last night and it was sheer gaming bliss [link is not a vid of me...just a silly nuking love fest that is fun to watch).

To be honest, having played both BF2 and BF2142, I keep coming back to 2142. Why? Becuase it rewards squads sticking together so much more than BF2. You get points as the squad leader and field upgrades for sticking close to the objective the SL has laid down.
Also, as you rightly point out, you don't get the frankly ridiculous overpowered jets.
Having said all that, I went back to play BF2 for a bit (as I upgraded my PC so I could play with all settings on high). I think it's a more intense game that 2142, and the weapons are more 'meaty'. -- 2d EveMaps

Try 250+ EVE fleet battles. You might be a little more useful than a sitting duck, or even be able to target call!

Wow...I had forgotten about that. I think I mentally blocked it for being so disturbing. I recall stopping playing for a few days at that point before I could face it again.

Edited by: Daedalus DuGalle on 16/09/2007 07:54:43 Ok, I admit, I'm kinda crap at resource management in Supcom. I find I build too slowly to obtain an army capable of bashing through base defense *and* get nukes at the same time. And waiting 80-odd minutes (edit: to get a nuke silo) using one engineer is just not on, but if I use 10 or so, I run into resource problems.
My main prob is I haven't played against human players...and playing against AI does nothing to improve my game.
To me it just seems a game like company of heroes seems for fun
Essential Oblivion mods according to me Oscuro's overhaul Retroactive health (so you don't have to beef up endurance asap) Quest award leveling (So you don't get penalized for doing quests as a newbie)
I personally also like random mods which affect stealth characters. Stuff that makes it harder but more effective is best. e.g. Stealth Overhaul mod.

Here's some resources that might help you out. In particular, watch the replays of top players -they will provide very useful strategies.
