Quote: EVE Online will be released for Linux with Cedega directly integrated into the game and on Mac through TransGaming's Cider portability engine.
So who will be running EVE on Linux or Mac now?

Cedega integration in EVE means two things.
a) more stability in OSX/Linux b) new target market area, which is unspoiled. (and MAC/Linux users are more mature commuters and society too).
Keep the good work CCP.

I might switch to linux, a friend was showing me how you can have different screen setups and the cube etc, looks really nice and better than bl**dy ALT+tab function in XP.

I'll probably try both clients. Looking forward to it - I wonder when it's scheduled to release. (Around eve 3.0 maybe?)

Well, speaking from Dev comments, they had said something about the Mac Version currently only being playable on Intel architecture Macs. I have a Powerbook. So I may or may not be happy.

I will at least be trying out the Mac Client. But the first time I am waiting to play because I have to wait for the Mac version of a patch I will reboot into XP home, which currently only has the purpose of running Eve and various supporting applications.

This may be too much awesomeness for one thread. Linux users have been after this kind of support from a larger MMO for a long time.
I do have a few questions:
1. It appears from the article that as opposed to a native client, Eve will be using the Cider portability engine from Transgaming. Will this be included in the eve client or will I be required to pay an additional $15 per month like Cedega users are required to do currently?
2. What kind of support can we expect? It's one thing to announce a linux compatible client. The ventrilo developers "announced" a linux ventrilo client nearly 4 years ago. That doesn't mean that they actually released it or would support it if they did.

Edited by: Patch86 on 12/09/2007 12:16:27 You already can play EVE in Linux under Wine, so I'm not thinking its going to be revolutionary (I already do play it on my Ubuntu box).
But extra stability, quality, and support are all nothing but an excellent thing.

Devs has stated before that the Linux client + wrapper will be provided just as free as the Windows client. The Cedega wrapper will be free, and configured to only work for EVE. ------

Within the last week ATI announced they were working on improving their linux support, and also releasing information concerning hardware to the community so open source drivers can be made. I'd say that potentially counts as leaps and bounds...

Cedega is significantly cheaper than $15/month.
Cider is something they add to programs before distribution so the seller pays it. ----- Visible Implants - good for so many occasions |

Cedega's usual product is junk, so probably not. If I'm wrong and the wrapper Cedega makes for the game is decent.. I'll be using it for sure.
Will also remove my windows partition finally.

Same thing goes for CCP and ATI: I won't believe it until its sitting in my home directory. Both have said that they were improving Linux support for quite some time now, and its never actually shown up. I know nothing about ATI, because I've never used them - but CCP are doing a semi-open beta test on the linux/mac client now. There was a signup thread a little while ago.

This is good news. I got the price wrong, mostly because it's been a while since I've used cedega. Once I found out that you could do exactly the same stuff in Wine, for free, I simply canceled the subscription. There are probably things that work in cedega that don't work in Wine and vice versa. I'm reserving my judgment until this comes out
BTW, if you are reading this and have no idea what linux is or have tried it once but never got into it, check out www.ubuntu.com Ubuntu is, at least in my experience, the easiest to use Linux version so far. While it may not have the following of Fedora, I happen to think it's more user friendly than Fedora.
