It seems that some people have trouble grasping the ôWhy?ö part of Eve PvP. These people do things to make themselves targets and then come to the forums, all teary eyed, and post about the ultimate unfairness of their characterÆs demise. They often will go so far as to equate the PvPers with real life rapists and killersà
To assist these people in dealing with their Eve life, I thought it might be useful to explain the ôWhy?ö part of PvP. Maybe understanding the reasons for the attacks will help others deal with the emotional trauma of losing at a video game.
Griefers û Griefers just want to kill you for the fun of it. They are specifically looking for lame kills. Surprisingly griefers are actually pretty rare in Eve, but they are there. Griefers are the ones trying to get newbies to steal from their cans or the ones flying around in disposable alts looking for pods to pop. Griefers are pretty pathetic, but they are also easy to avoid. DonÆt steal from cans, donÆt fly around in a pod, and you wonÆt have too much trouble from the griefers.
Duelists û Another Eve rarity. This guy is looking for a test of skill. HeÆs pretty easy to understand and if he killed you itÆs likely because you agreed to a fight. (People duel all the time, but itÆs usually people in corporations who can trust each other. The potential for real loss and chance for treachery makes dueling random people a very dangerous pastime.)
Thrill Seekers - After a while most people get the urge to go out PvPing. They fit out a cruiser (or frigate) and head to low sec, looking for a kill. Sometimes they get their kill, most of the time they wake up in a clone vat. Either way the thrill seeker probably gave you a fair fight.
Low Sec/ 0.0 Pirate û The pirate is out for money. He wants to kill you and take your stuff although he often will take money to not kill you and not take your stuff. This doesnÆt make him a griefer or a bad person. Piracy is a legitimate part of the game. Pirates usually hang out in low sec.
High Sec Pirate û With enough firepower itÆs possible to take down a target ship before CONCORD shows and kills the attackers. Because of the loss of security standing and the loss of ships, high sec pirates can only afford to hit valuable targets. You can avoid them by not being a valuable target. If youÆve got to transport valuable stuff then use a ship that can warp away before an enemy can lock you, scan you, evaluate your cargo, and warp scramble you. Or, use a scout or two to warn you of large hostile forces at a gate.
Alliance Soldiers û Oddly enough, these are the people that most folks donÆt understand. 0.0 Alliances are usually in a state of low grade war with other alliances, punctuated by the occasional very hot war, or a declared Empire war. Alliances need to make money to fund their operations. Ratting and mining are both a big part of this. Naturally the ratters and miners are easy targets while theyÆre in the belts, and they need to be protected from enemy soldiers and pirates. The best way to do this is to keep hostiles out of your territory in the first place.
So, the alliance soldier has to go camp the chokepoints into his territory. He usually finds it very boring, but itÆs part of his job. That means the alliance soldier is rather upset at you because inconsiderate trespassers force him to spend boring night after night on guard duty. If you trespass, you die, no excuses.
Sometimes the alliance soldiers camp gates in other alliances territories as part of their war. They are trying to block commerce and travel through their enemies territory. Or they might conduct raids in attempt to disrupt the enemies economic activity and catch some of their miners/ratters asleep in the belts. In this case the Alliance soldier will kill you because you are a potential enemy in a warzone.
I hope this clears some things up.

oh ur making is sooo much more compelx that it is... you got people who kill noobs by baiting them coz they suck at normal pvp and u got pilots who kill anything they move coz they a) want 2, b) want to, c)feel like it & d) want to. Then you got alliances in 0.0 who fight to defend there space/take new space. unless u go to 0.0 u wont meet these guys.

This needs a sticky tbh. Should be mandatory reading right after noobs finish the tutorial.
Eve life is harsh, but that's what makes it fun and unique among any other MMO out there.

This should really be made part of Hammer's old-to-WoW-new-to-EVE guide. It fits right in.
