so luminous kernite is supposed to be better right? then how come it sells for nearly half the price of regular kernite? and how come wherever i go i only come upon the luminous one?

In Gallente space, there's a similar situation with Omber. It seems that there was a mission or two that required a quantity of plain ol Omber, so mission runners would just buy a bunch of Omber instead of mining it. Omber prices soared to ridiculous levels while the more valuable varieties of Omber stayed the same. It may be similar with your Kernite. _______________________________

Yo don't. You search and search for a low traveled area and hope no one has mined there yet, or you try to wake up early if you are US time, for the server reboot when the 'roids respawn. Me, I have lots of belts I've marked that never get mined, due to being out of the way spots :)

From what I have seen, you will find the 3 grades of an ore in the same belts (within the limits of whatever random distribution is applied by the game).

Move to Australia - our timezone sucks most of the time, but downtime finishes at 10pm here and we can mine all the good stuff before anyone else wakes up or gets home from work.

The better varieties of ore ALWAYS refine for more minerals than the basic ones, there is a +5% and a +10% of each ore.
If you sell the ore unrefined, basic Veldspar, Scordite, Omber and Kernite may indeed be more valuable for the reasons stated above. It may also be because the competion among buyers is simply higher.

This is part of a broader concept which I like to think of as "the buyers are weird".
Basically the price that something sells for on the market is whatever people are prepared to pay for it. If everyone was perfectly rational then these prices would be in line. However, most people will tend to simply make sure their sell price is lower than everyone else's and/or their buy price is higher than everyone else's, without really thinking about whether those prices are 'worth it'.
This leads to some strange situations where items that are equivalent but better sell for less than their inferior alternatives, such as luminous vs normal kernite in your case, or Beta CPRs vs CPR IIs, Phased Muon damps vs Damps II etc. This situation continues until the market (i.e. all the individuals who use it) decides/notices that the prices are askew and they'd rather have the better one at a lower price. Then it tends to level out (though slowly as it seems most people with orders don't look at comparable items).
Though in this case, since luminous kernite really isn't a substitute for kernite in the mission sense so it may be the case that it is more desirable and thus the price stay higher.
Really I haven't added much more to the existing responses, other than to say that sometimes prices are weird for a reason, and often they are weird for no real reason in which case just try to take advantage of them!
(P.S. I haven't checked the prices for ores recently, but when I last did you got more ISK from refining and selling off the minerals even if your refinery skills were somewhat low. Especially now that Tritanium prices have risen recently, I'd expect this still to hold. It should take almost no time at all to get Refining up to level 2-3 and the ore specific skill to 2-3 as well).

i have good refining skills, which puts me at 91.25% (at least i think thats good), and so if i refine a batch (400) of luminous kernite, and sell the crystals at the avg price i would get 54k. now if i mined up just regular kernite and sold 400 of it, at the avg price, i would get 80k. so then how come in this case the minerals aren't giving me more money?

If the difference is that large, either mineral prices are very low there, or some of the reasons above has forced the basic kernite price to be very high.
You also lose some to taxes, but with a difference that large, even a perfect refiner could not turn profit by refining the basic kernite. Some of the orders may also be old.

It wouldn't hurt to check prices in nearby systems or regions. If the prices are low for minerals there, but higher in a nearby region, it might be worth it to make a few jumps to make some extra cash. ------------------- 4 8 15 16 23 42 108 |

is there a way i can check the market details for a region where i am not? i know i can go on eve-central and check out the prices there, but there are SO many orders, and there is no way to filter them by region, going through them all just gives me a headache.

To check prices in another region you either have to travel to that region, or you can log in an alternate character who is in that region. The 2 extra character slots on your account are good for doing this, or if you have a 2nd computer, you can make a trial account and put it in a shuttle and zip around to check pricing. -=^=-

The "Preparations for War" Amarr storyline mission asks for several thousand (8k iirc) units of basic Kernite to be delivered to the agent. I've always assumed that affected the cost of Kernite.
