I personally say nay.
EVE probably has the oldest player base of any MMO, save for the AARP's up-coming game 'Kill me Billy', so I dont see who we're protecting.
EVE also has a very mature player base. While emotions do tend to run high, I think the majority of posts are fairly civilized and anything totally out of the realm of decency is quickly moderated.
In addition, the filter picks up some silly words that either dont need to be edited or are parts of a larger word. For exampole, ******** (a mentally handicapped individual) is *****'d. **** (male genitalia) is a part of several words in teh English langauge.
I do see the interest in maintaining a clean board, but I really feel editing out the occasional swear word, which more likely than not is thrown in for emphasis and NOT to bad mouth some pilot, is NOT a good tradeoff for losing ANY clarity on these boards.

One of my older proposals was relatively simple.
Unlogged users get the "word filtered" version of the boards. Logged-in users get a (default "on") setting to display boards with or without the word filter.
Seing how you're supposed to be "13+ or have parental consent" to play the game, and therefore that being (normally) the only way to access the "disable filter" option, it would be, I believe, more than appropriate. _

More words should be filtered. For example:

It is not a matter of the maturity or age of the average player base but a matter of the rating EVE is given. And as this game is open for kids the public forum must follow the appropriate guidelines in language filtering.

Nay.
If "kids" can't manage to handle dirty words, then there's something wrong with the kid. Where I live i can call a cop the thingy between the legs of a male horse without him/her being able to arrest me.
Cencor is an offence against free speech anyway.

I don't mind the filter. That said, it has some hilarious settings. For instance, a 5 letter word meaning:
1.to break without complete separation of parts; become fissured: The plate *****ed when I dropped it, but it was still usable.
is censored but 'pussies' is not.
Go figure.

I'm in favour so long as it's intelligent enough not to victimise people who live just north of Lincoln. Filters that pick out rude words you hadn't thought of when you typed the message are like having a conversation with Beavis and Butthead. Or worse. I've seen plenty of forums descend into genuine unpleasantness over the censoring of the word for smirky-laughing.

I don't understand language filters. Just a case of in one hand holding high a supposed idea of innocence when the reality is children smoke, swear, **** and kill.
An adult getting offended by swearing? hmmm...they probably get offended by *** marriage too, tbqfh.

I can testify that even those young as 9 in my area have a commendable understanding of how to swear like a fishwife..... EDIT Hang on - "bastard" wasn't filtered yet the name of a certain German WW2 faction cannot? God those bastards can get annoying.

Thats because bastard is in and of itself a legitimate term, much like ***** though it it probably added due to the fact that it likens women to animals, and we all must be politically correct. In the case of bastard, being illegitimate in this day and age is becoming more and more common, to the point that it may soon lose its potency.
By the same sort of ideal, they should filter the words:
- noob - owned - carebear - macro miner - Etc.
I know it sounds all mickey mouse and such, but one can easily liken the word "noob" to being called a *****, or equivalent. If we must filter insults, let us filter all insults, not just pick and choose those that fit someone elses definition of morally acceptable language.

I would have to say this kind of filtering would be against freedom of speech. Which I'm sure is a law, even in Iceland.
Some people say censorship is there to protect our children. While I can agree on it's usage in film-rating and such. But on internet forums? Then I have to say nay.
1. If some words are 'banned' children use them anyways because they're 'forbidden'. 2. Whether you want to or not. Children pick up these words sooner or later. 3. If they havent picked up on these words already, and they're playing eve, something is wrong with them.
furthermore, **** censorship!

It's not a law in the UK for certain. I doubt Iceland has laws against companies banning swearing on company property, which is what this website is. ----- Visible Implants - good for so many occasions |

Freedom of speech is definitely a law in the UK. I guess this specific matter would fall under each nation's (that enforce fos) interpretation of that law or something.

We will take a look at the filter in the near future and make some changes, mainly to allow more words. However, this will put more responsibility on you as forum posters, there are a lot of words that can be used in a good way and a bad way and when you use them in the bad way you may get warned for it. So yes, we are going to make the forums and the bad word filter more mature.

Censorship of anything is stupid imo. Many don't think this way, but I do
There's no reason why certain letter combinations or vocal cord sounds should be "evil" or inappropriate, its plain stupid. I feel the same way about nudity. Blocking out someones behind on TV is insane. Everyone has a butt, it's part of the anatomy. Why not block out fingers and arms? They don't censor dog nipples on animal planet, why block human boobs? Its stupid.
Also, EVE specific, why in the toodle-toes is the word p00 censored on the forums? They say p00 on Barney, and anyone who plays EVE pretty much has a credit card...sheesh

Edited by: Beowulf Scheafer on 14/09/2007 22:32:47 so basically we may be able to tell the whole community that there actually IS a whole corporation constantly under ***** influence and still able to get at least a kill or 2 while talking about *** buttsex and greeting each other with "Heil Hinterwaeldler" ?
we would really love to show everybody that this is a great game that doesn't give a dime on conventions and allow you to be who you want to be whenever you want to be

Sounds promising. However, I'd rather see you got rid of it completely. If you can't communicate with other people on a public forum without using foul language no one is listening to you anyways because they realize you're an idiot. And if you're young and still haven't learned this, a temporary forum ban will just do you good I believe.
