The Care Bears characters were created in 1981 at American Greetings, but weren't sold as toys and other products until 1983. To keep the character program secret until it was ready to be advertised, it was called Project II by American Greetings and the company's partners. They were called this because Care Bears was the second group of characters American Greetings and these partners createdłthe first being the well-known and hugely successful Strawberry Shortcake characters. ______________________

or..if you've ever equipped a mining laser once in your eve lifetime, you may be a carebear. ______________________

^^ Thats possibly a little unfair.
Typically a carebear is someone unwilling to partake in PvP, or when they do; (by force or not) and then fail - whine about certain game dynamics not quite being to their preference or their PC crashing. Certainly their abilities would never come into question.

There are two definitions, which sometimes conflict. Some people use one exclusive, some the other exclusively, some both at varying times, and some just use it as a generic insult.
Carebear (1): noun; a person who avoids PvP combat at all costs. In games where PvP is optional via a flag, it means anyone who has the flag turned off.
Carebear (2): noun; a person who whines to get the game balance moved in his favour. Note that whether the game balance should, or should not, be moved in that direction, doesn't necessarily matter. If, to take a hypothetical example, the game was badly skewed in favour of miners, and non-miners wanted it rebalancing away from that, they'd still be accused of carebearism from the miners.
By the second defintion, a pirate can be a carebear, and a griefer usually is. By the first, a carebear pirate is an oxymoron. Hence frequent arguments.

it was a common term for years in everquest, mostly used as an insult by zek (pvp) server players when they were trolling / jihading other servers message boards and bragging about how they were superior everquest players because of their leet pvp skillz. zekfugees were always big on drama
basically when someone thinks they are a better gamer than you because they are more skilled at the pvp aspects of certain games then you are labelled as a lower form of gamer, be it a noob, carebare or whatever.
a real life example would be me, who is tall and strong, walking up to you in the street and punching the living sh1t out of you and then abusing you for not wanting to fight me in the first place, and telling you to stop complaining because the mechanics of real life allow me assault you in such a way.

..the significant difference, of course, being than IRL, at least in most places, there are laws in place to restrain that sort of behaviour. In the vast majority of EVE, might is right, in its purest, most brutal form.

talking about horrible RL examples, a CB is a guy in your carate class, who beliefs that shadow boxing is the real thing and is trying to change the rules worldwide instead of simply switching over to the yoga class next door.
in general, i guess avoiding the term is a good idea, though some ppl just have it written on their forehead...
