Edited by: PeveS on 15/09/2007 14:06:51 9/4/2007 EVE Online hits new PCU record
CCP is pleased to announce that on Monday, September 3, a new Peak Concurrent Users (PCU) record was reached when over 35,000 players were logged into the Tranquility server at the same time. Congratulations to all of the starship pilots who were part of this momentous achievement in the history EVE.
This is all that matters....records and $$$

Yes, but at the same time, this is getting a little ridiculous. When you can count on the servers crashing at least one a day, there's problems with your game.

It might not be easy but its not impossible -- and considering the amount of revenue generated I think its about time that CCP actually employed a team of people who are capable of keeping things running.

They could at least schedule some event for next week with double SP rate for 24 hours to say there sorry. Many (free) games do this sort of thing if there servers go down only once.

no, i meant running a system under such a heavy load, with such high expectations from players who go ape s**t at the slightest glitch.
So they have a problem ? - it happens. Be glad it will be fixed at all (and here's to hoping). In millions of lines of code it can take ages to even find what's wrong sometimes. - i think ccp do a grand job, to be honest.
edit: in the unnamed company i did a bit of coding for last, some bugs were 3-4 years old, and wernt even really minor either, maybe eve players just expect too much.

Play in peace? I find that difficult to believe being as an un-interuppted session is a rareity these past few days.
People expect to encounter the odd crash when you have the complications of a single server... but everyday?
I dont think so. Eve has never been super-reliable ever since launch but last week or so has been a joke.
Use some of the vast wealth you have accumilated over the past 4 years CCP and invest in better software/servers/hardware/staff that are RELIABLE!!

Exactly why all 3 toons are on long lvl 5 skills since last patch... We'll be lucky to get an hour in today, as they have no clue what is up. It is obvious reboots aren't resolving the issue.

I just despise whiney vocal customers personally. I tend to make them wait longer just because they annoy me so much and it makes me smile to see them suffer for it.
Anyway, CCP is not as evil as me and is trying to bring all their customers pleasure. Of course they are not doing this on purpose to **** you whiners off. There just happens to be a problem with the database, and if you had the slightest clues about databases and how evil they can be to you you would understand that it can sometimes couse unwanted trouble. Also, it is weekend and most server employees will be on stand by.
Actually some of them will be on their way to the CCP headquarters right now to help fix the problem. you see, that is how things work in the real world. It's different from your dream worlds where everything gets solved in an instant.
Sometimes you just need to relax and realise that somewhere in iceland rigth now all hell broke loose, server admins rotating at high speed just to bring you, the dear customers, the game you love to play. Unfortunately it appears to be a more severe problem wich takes its time to be fixed and is maybe also hard to pin down.
Soooooo, lets take a deep breath, go outside, clean your room, take a shower, take a nap, eat something, read something, watch TV, do some sport. You know, you get the idea. And the next time you buy a beer or cigarettes remember that you could have saved that money and not harm your health.

I'm realy getting bored... the problem is not only that this ******* server don't work, the problem is that if you suffer a severe loss from these kind of problems they ******* anwer ya with a pre-written message containing unuseful stuff like:
There is nothing of strange on your loss Maybe is your connection or maybe your computer that sux.
Do you think is correct acting like this?, in other games when people are unable to play the dev give them back the hours of play lost or some other kind of stuff beacause is something of "bad" that can't happen and dev must ask sorry.
I never saw anyone asking sorry about how ******* impossible to play is getting this game, let's hope REV3 do something or wtf is better to wait Star Trek Online, maybe will be playable.

If only they had invested more time in coming up with a better server architecture before they actually started coding it... I mean, the biggest friggin problem with eve is that:
- In low traffic systems, there's 1 server node controlling everything - In high traffic systems (Jita, Oursulaert, ...) there's 1 server node controlling everything...
Doesn't this seem unbelievably stupid? I mean, couldn't they have come up with a slightly more intelligent solution such as: dynamic server load, automatically giving more cpu/bandwidth to some server nodes when they get more load on them... DUH! Offcourse they could! But they didn't... And they still didn't... And in my opinion, they're never gonna do it... Because they just keep adding crap content with fancy names and they just forget about the most important thing of all, which is server stability and a smarter server architecture.
But who am I to contest the almighty powers of CCP, lol, a bunch of degenerate python programmers...

Isn't it getting to the stage where people would rather have the game offline for however long it takes to figure out what the main problems are at the moment and fix them?
IMHO it would be better to have EVE offline for a week (with fair warning so everyone can set a long skill, e.g.) and fix it so there isn't so much crashing (I understand it can't be eliminated completely, but surely with a professional system it should only be like once every few months?) than to continue with this stop-start business.

Problem is, there is no game that is setup quite like EVE is, especially with server configuration. Everything they do breaks new ground in the field, so they have to hunt nasty bugs as they find them, or risk a major outage. It's not like they can just say "OK, over Thanksgiving, we're going to bring the server down and kill X-amount of bugs and then everything will be fine from there on out". That's just not how it works.

Hmm, isn't it a question of degree? If it's that innovative and cutting edge, and consequently as flakey as you seem to be saying we should expect, then it shouldn't be being offered as an online game that people pay subscriptions for (it might be something CCP could offer to the public as a free system people could test, for example - in such a context such regular crashing would be acceptable).
OTOH if it's fixable so that we could still expect some crashes (because it's so cutting edge), but far less frequently (e.g. once every few months), then it would be worth taking it down for however long it takes to sort it out so it's at that level of flakiness (which would be acceptable for paying customers).
If it's not fixable to that degree of reliability, then isn't it right to say it's broken?

All whiners (lots of you) who are going to quit (none of you), please contract me your stuff and send me an evemail.
Be sure to put it in an NPC station, thanks.
On a more serious note, while I'm sure all the IT students playing EVE could run circles around CCP's staff (just ask and you'll tell us I'm sure), you know that this isn't anything new. I still thing the game's more stable than a year or two ago, and if we had the same code then as we do ow, the game would likely have to cap its users due to strain. -------------- Fulfilling 0.0 Ammo needs since 2 days after being made. |
