Everyone is against a new shard and for good reason. One community is what makes EvE EvE.
However has anyone ever considered a new universe that is unrelated to EvE. Like a new server which is much smaller than Tranquility, has no empire space and you can't use your existing characters.
No player economy either, everything supplied by stations in abundance for really cheap prices.
A PvP paradise.

Most characters on the test server are already souped up with skillpoints.
I want Ibis wars.

One Shard:
Horay i can convo some guy on the total otherside of the universe i will never go.
Multi Shards:
Horray eve dosent crash every 5 mins

If you decided to travel for 3 hours across space into 0.0 and didnt get popped on the way and did visit him. What would happen.

No shards, and I can't say this often enough.
You know how giddy I get when I start Eve and see that there's 30k+ people on? Seriously. I start flapping my arms and giggling and sometimes fall out of my chair. That fact that I'm playing a game that houses more people than some small towns gives Eve that "big, indifferent world" feeling.

You get a giddy feeling that the servers very likely to crash in the middle of your mission/gank/op?
People were satying the same thing a while back when 20k was being broken. WOW THERES 20K PEOPLE ON!!!
Theres plenty of space for two shards if it fixes the probelms.

F'Shards, seriously. This game can handle 100,000 people, it's not the server load, it's the database. Not once have I see an outage message of "Hey, the server can't handle so many people, so we need to keep it down until enough people give up and stop trying to login". Never. Ever.

I propose a compromise. Like the original poster suggested, get rid of Empire space and the market. But keep one shard.
Then everyone will be happy. The PvPers will be happy cause they get more pee vee pee, database will be happy cause it doesn't have all the market junk to look after and the carebears will be happy playing Hello Kitty.
All in all, this seems like a win, win situation. And it will only take a few days to implement.

One thing I love about PvP is that if I get some goot loot, I can use it to better my own ship. Also, I love crushing other people's hopes and dreams
Basically, I hate how in some games (WoW, I'm looking at you) a PvP death means you get to resurrect 30 seconds later and w/e it doesn't matter. It makes PvP mean nothing, really, devalues it, and makes it less fun.
