I was talking to a personal friend about eve (having him only recently start), and we were talking about his skill training and preferred path, where he hit me with the question:
Quote:So where do Cruisers fit into the large scheme of things?
And quite honestly, I was stumped. I've seen very little in the way of use for cruisers since I got into a Myrmidon, and other than using them as a stepping stone to tech 2 cruisers, I have not seen them being widely used in all aspects of the game. I rarely see any Cruisers in anybodies killboards, they're too fragile to be worth using in many roles, and they don't have the flexibility of their larger counterparts.
The only advantage I can see in a PvP situation is the price, and even then, if you can spend an extra few million fitting a battlecruiser that will win the fight that your disposable cruiser will struggle in, then what's the point? What benefit is there to flying a cruiser? |

The T2 cruisers are nice - some useful specialisations - tackle , logistics , etc. Tiny signatures, excellent resists and decent DPS. These get used a lot.
as for T1 Cruisers:
My attempts at solo PvP have been in the Rupture although does limit possible targets somewhat.
It also turns out that the Rupture makes a great little ninja exploration boat for low sec
but really like you say - you don't see them about much in general and certainly not in any of the fleets I've been in of late |

Cruisers are what you use while you learn the all-important battlecruiser skills. You can easily run lvl2s with a cruiser. Depending on your abilities (not trained skills necessarily) a couple of cruisers can handle lvl3s. I'm assuming you're asking about early in the game, and not the more specialized, T2 ships that do serve distinct and important functions. Anyone with any sense has already left town. |

There are some "role" T1 cruisers that are rather useful. Logistics and mining (for those of us not willing to devote time to mining barge, but still do the occasional rock hunting, while waiting for 'rats) for example. My main ship is a Drake, but I still break out the Osprey every once and a while.
Some missions don't fit battlecruisers and allow cruisers, queue the Caracal.
And yes, unless you stick to the Destroyer while you skill up Battlecruiser, that's what you fly for that week or so. |

Yes, specifically Tech 1, but even outside of early times in a characters life. I mean, T1 frigates serve a purpose as tacklers and dogfighters, destroyers serve as gankers and some more direct fire from a small package, battlecruisers make up the majority of a fleets composition thanks to their adaptability and modest damage, and Battleships serve as a guns platform for bigger threats. All of these Tech 1 ships serve a purpose in the universe past missioning, whether it be pvp or not. I've never seen something a cruiser can bring to the above that a Battlecruiser or Destroyer couldn't.

The only real use for T1 cruisers is getting fights. Most people are woefully under skilled both in SP and pilot ability. We don't let people into a BC hull until they have nearly perfect skills, this translates into have an extremely nice skillset for cruisers such that when you reach cruiser V, you can go troll solo/tiny gang BC's. When you're sitting at nearly all V's you can trounce the typical mega nullsec pilots who have terrible pilot skills, terrible SP choices (lul bc below V or t1 guns), and typically even worse fits.
Amongst intelligent people though T1 Cruisers are relegated to failfit challenge tournaments. (Its like a white elephant cruiser tourney, everyone submits a failfit cruiser and randomly selects one to fight to the death in
There may be some merit to the concept of wolf packing in cruisers, but its mostly unnecessary. |

CSM wrote:Frigates and Cruisers:
CCP wants to boost tech one Frigates and Cruisers so that they are viable options for new players, rather than the current system where new players are often told to skip over them towards tier two Battlecruiser or even tech two ships. CCP noted that Cruisers should generally be more mobile than a Battlecruiser, but that this is not currently always the case. Furthermore, CCP added that the higher velocity of Cruisers was not often viewed as being worth the loss of EHP and slots. The CSM agreed and was pleased, noting that there are a large number of ships in these classes that have long needed iteration. Recent Dev Posts confirm this direction and point towards T1 Frigate, Cruiser, HAC and CS re-balancing. As for T2 Frigates, Assault Frigates are seeing this done already and EAF's are next. Ceptors and Cov Ops seem to meet their roles well.
You can look forward to quite a few T1 Buffs if the minutes and Dessies are any indication. |

First off. CPU is a long term friend of mine but he was on the losing side this time!
From a solo perspective most of the time t1 cruisers are woefully inadequate although they are often very effective versus small frig gangs if fitted for the occasion. Sadly they are generally lacking and need some attention from CCP, with a few tweaks they could be more effective solo. For now there is little reason to use them other than a brief stepping-stone towards bc.
T2 variants are a whole different story and aside from sniping being obsolete given modern probing; they are more or less fine.

Frigates and Cruisers were once meant to be the mainstay ships for EVE.
However, due to a horrible attempt to balance damage/tracking scaling, that concept got screwed up.
Instead, up until the recent webber nerf Bigger was automatically better. The introduction of the Destroyer and Battlecruiser classes, finally killed all justifiably for frigates and cruisers to exist.
The destroyer class was meant to be a good anti frigate class that was extremely vulnerable to cruisers and above, instead the horribly imbalanced Thrasher became the king of all frigates, without having a realistically higher vulnerability to bigger ships.
Battlecruisers were once meant to be be extremely vulnerable to battleships, yet able to dispose of cruisers. Instead they became the best all round ship class. Oddly enough the tier 1 and the recent tier 3 iterations came closest to being remotely balanced.
With the tier 2 versions (Drake, Hurricane,, Myrmidon (pre nerf..) and Harbinger) became the by far best all round ships. They have good tanks, good damage, good versatility, good against all classes of ships, and a superb price and thus ISK/bang value.
The solution would be quite simple: Decrease BC speed, and heavily nerf BC tanks. This would make them vulnerable to battleships and even frigates (as they were meant to be). Which in turn would really spark more diversity on the battlefield....
Don't really expect for CCP to have the balls to actually "balance" things for a change... it took 4+ years to agree that the Drake needed nerfing ( not to mention that the proposed "nerf" is actually a steep buff...) |

Furthermore, a good small gang of these underpowered ships can be used effectively versus more expensive gang comps. One tank and one gank is common enough now but still works. Also simply out piloting in underestimated ships can be devastating. Edit: spelling
this about sums it up for me. I have to wonder how much of the T1 cruiser issue is simply due to people opting to fly more expensive BCs. Only time I see them is blackbirds running as cheap ECM boats
The American public's reaction to the change was poor and the new cola was a major marketing failure. The subsequent reintroduction of Coke's original formula, re-branded as "Coca-Cola Classic", resulted in a significant gain in sales, leading to speculation that the introduction of the New Coke formula was just a marketing ploy |

Somebody has quite the superiority complex. (i put the sections that made me lol in bold)
T1 cruisers certainly need a buff when compared to most other ship classes in the game, but cruisers can be very fun for newer players to pvp in. Also t1 cruisers are the king of the isk/efficiency hill.
i would submit this as evidence http://www.figl-alliance.com/?a=kill_related&kll_id=69111 Yes we had the superior numbers, but look at the amount of isk fielded by each side.

The problem isn't inherently cruisers, the problem really is MWDs.
Basically your options as a cruiser are:
1> Fit a MWD to actually be able to use your speed advantage and put up with BSes been able to track you 2> Fit a AB and be slower than a BS with a MWD - Which 99% of the time suffers no major disadvantage from this because of the already large size of it's sig radius means everything is hitting for max damage anyway.
Also the secondary problem in EvE is of course that trying to get close in a speed tanking ship, you often take a hard volley or two on the way in, when you get there the drones are waiting which you have to tank while you kill the BS. Not happening :) A BC MIGHT handle it but only a shield tanked 'cane or drake can do it and only with a good level of player skills to keep the BS guns out-tracked or a heavy nano-fit (limiting dps)
So basically its a catch 22 situation for cruisers, hence the quite large number of dedicated AHAC gangs with AB and why they are successful. Cruisers can just about do the same thing but suffer for their paper thin tanks where as AHACs.
Personally I'd say the solution was simply to make cruisers have a role bonus of 50-100% (for testing) bonus to AB speed (bringing it to 250% - 300% base from 200%) and a SLIGHT tank increase, with the T2 cruisers receiving the same bonus but varying it slightly from ship to ship (like the vaga which would probably still want a MWD, as would the Angel cruiser who's name eludes me so perhaps gets a little something else instead? +2.5km point range? ;) )
Gives them the speed with the difficulty to hit they need in order to be able to fight on the battlefield effectively.
However at the end of the day, frigates and cruisers are T1 vessels, while the T2 versions are easily reachable and not unaffordable they will be quickly replaced as its human nature to want the best ship you can get ;)
We'd see a lot more command ships on the field if it was as quick to train as HACs, but there are about an extra 1.5-2 months of skills involved + and extra 120ish mil per ship which puts people off the command ships. The BCs are favored not so much for their strengths as for their flexibility in been able to engage most things, putting out a lot of DPS at a much better isk/ship rate than the other options (BS, HAC). So to be realistic any major improvements in the cruiser should also come at the cost of an increase in price of the ship as well.

This is exactly what I am doing atm on an alt toon. I am flying a cruiser for L2 missions but am training all core skills up to Vs and then some laser spec before I jump into a BC. Even though that is a narrow band of usefulness for cruisers, they do well in that role, and they are cheap to replace if you lose one.

Cruisers are cost effective well balanced platforms they are most useful in support escort and utility roles while larger ships can go focus on dealing damage and smaller ships perform intercpetions and rapid response.
Crusiers should be following frigates and provide them with the fire support and electornics thus reliving the frigates of thier duties allowing the frigate to leave to go repair from the encounter or moving onto the next target.
Tech 2 cruisers are specific mission and are effective in them however are not entirely cost effective cost of fitting a tech 2 cruisers almost rivals some cost effective battleship fitting thus damage type tech 2 cruisres are not as useful in a fleet envrionment. Only very special tech 2 cruisres are frequently deployed on fleet envrionments mostly logistics, heavy interdictors and force recons.

We like to take 10-man spidertanking T1-fit Vexor fleets against overwhelming odds. Its fun because the losses are cheap, the pvp is exciting, and if we kill ANYTHING, it'll generally be more expensive than the entire fleet combined.

Tech 1 cruisers are a blast for pvp. Sometimes it is the only way anyone will bother fighting you because they think you are an easy kill. Just lke everything in Eve though, the ship is only as good as the pilot. They are excellent ships to fly solo if the pilot knows how to use them.
For the newer people remember this, pvp is more than just warping to zero and pressing the fire button and bigger ships will not make up for lack of skill. |
