While I have a BS, I am pretty much a noob in low sec and seldom (if ever) go down there. I belong to a corp with interests in Stain (a darned long haul), and I would like to expand my presence in low sec areas. That being said, overall ship suggestions (I fly Gallente/Caldari), advised skills & equip would help me take the step. Thanks for any assistance you offer.

Firstly be careful. That BS is not going to be a good asset alone in low sec because you will not be able to hold your enemies down or choose your range against them too easily. Make sure your ships are insured and that you can afford to loose them because it will happen. Also make VERY certain your insurance clone is up to date because you WILL get Podded and loose everything if it is not.
Also, I would highly recommend that unless you are going to go for an Electronic Warefare role and buddy up with corp mates as a Tackler or ECM boat then ignore your Caldari side and go for your Gallente training. Their ships are a notably superior in combat especailly when alone. For fleet engaugement though consider a well fitted Rokh with your friends.
That is the best advice I can give you at present I am afraid.

A good start would be to upload your skills on InEVE, so we know what we're dealing with.
Dominix or even Megathron are both decent options, Dominix is cheaper and easier to tank but needs good drone skills, Megathron is tougher to fit but has a better damage output. Hyperion is kind of "meh" due to price, but at least tanks well... not so hot in solo engagements though. Scorpion has better chances of getting away from a small engagement, but dies horribly against several targets. Raven is a decent overall ship, but wouldn't advanture in it solo. Rokh can be a beast with blasters, but it's damn expensive and needs rather good skills to truly shine.
Anyway, my advice would be "don't fly solo", especially on longer hauls through lowsec/0.0 (and use scouts for your gang). If your corp has some capitals, you could maybe convince them to "move your stuff" on their next haul. _

I'd say keep that BS in highsec for the time being, use a cheaper T1 cruiser or BC if you have the cash in lowsec, it'll be maneuverable enough and disposable so if you do die, all your assets didn't just blow up with it.

What sort of presence were you thinking of. Are you going to help defend your corp or are you interested in running supply missions to and from hi-sec?

While I mention I can fly a BS and solo all L4s with a Domi/Raven/CNR/Drake, it is my intent to use cruiser or less for a time in low sec for ratting and pvp. Would the caldari or gallente side of ships be better as a generalist, knowing that if I am ratting, I will likely get in pvp situations...or perhaps train some Minmatar ships?
I am just getting into T2 gear, and have some trained for low slot stuff and am at the verge of getting sentry drones for domi-work.

Passive-tanked Drake or Myrmidon with one or two ECM modules should generally do the trick for safety while ratting, I guess. Cheaper (and much less effective) version would be a Caracal (naaah). A half-decent passive tank ensures you can survive a bit of a beating, the ECM helps to get away if cornered (or it's just taking too long and others might show up), as you only need one succesfull jam on the scrambler to get away (and you should have enough time due to the tank). _
