I would like for there to be more depth in the invention process, do something more than just invent something that already exists.
As with real markets you could have items that are of inferior quality or superior quality, and with the in-station shops you could have corporation brand items, and you could put research into making an item better in a certain area (for increased cost of course), or put research into making items cheaper and faster.
These items would only be available from stations where the corporations are selling them, the shops could be accessed via the hanger. But due to some kind of concord regulations modified items could not be sold on the open market (kind of like officer items).
The skills that we currently use for invention would be required, and the process would be much like we do with research agents. You would have to research one area, but doing so would effect another in a bad way.
Like if you wanted to make an item cheaper you could research to reduce the build costs. But doing so would come at the price of increased build times.
T2 components could be added to the process to improve a weapons rof, or damage output. But doing so would also increase the cost.
To make it so that everybody isnt just maxing out an item. You could have it so that 1 level of research takes so much time, depending on player skill, and the number of players participating. And each subsequent level would take longer.
Also you could only produce the product in stations where your corp has an office, and there would be no physical blueprint that could be lost or stolen.
Research would also put some mission like content into it, as you could have your research manager sending you messages, and you could make the process faster by doing these 'missions'. SO an active corp could have a breakthrough twice as fast as an alt corp churning away mindlessly.
Also thise could be where caldari outposts shine (the caldari outpost is the redheaded stepchild of 0.0) is that you would have bonuses to this process (without having to purchase some stupid upgrade ffs).

It may be an old idea, but CCP needs to enact this old idea to eradicate the remaining imbalance caused by the T2 Lotto. The best way to rebalance T2 is to make it obsolete thru invention.

I dont think you guys understand, im talking about making it so that when you invent you get a unique result, invention was good because it broke the t2 lottery. But its kind of boring when you are already going to know the end result, maybe i should have named it advanced design or something.
I think it would be a good idea for corps to be able to produce items that make them unique. This could add alot of flavor an variety to the current market, where you go to buy something and you already know all there is to know about it.

I agree and disagree.
It would be good to be able to do the former, but at the same time, to achieve the latter you have rigs - potentially each ship is unique as dictated by the pilot who wishes to fit rigs and fly it.
How far would this unique design stretch? extra slots? Or just enhancements to the power grid etc?

And how, pray tell, do you expect the result of invention to be determined?
The problem with invention is not that it does not invent, the problem is that CCP called it invention at all. A better name would be "reverse engineering".

Invention + careful market research has made me billions.
16 invention-only ships in Rev 3 isn't improvement enough?

I don't need to make new items and inflate the db with custom stats for everything....
What I would like though is a chance at moderate success.... if an invention fails, there should be a chance at inventing a bpc for best named, if not, next, and on down the line, and only if it fails a check on a meta 2 item should it be a complete failure
