I've been finding some midshipmans badges and other id tags of military people from different factions. Can someone explain this a bit? Are some going to get me in trouble if I'm caught with them in my ship? What are they for?

badges will get you popped in their respective space (goto show info, and choose the legality tab). IE: Caldari Insignia.. in Caldari Space = BYE BYE SHIP...
with a sec status of 2.5+ (i believe) you are safe from scans..
some are used for lp store offers, i just collect them all myself in case, but generally they are useless aside from the lp store.

You can use them as trophy`s to decorate your pod. You can sell `em, or you can safe them for the goodies in your local LP store (check it out).
If you carry f.e. gallente insignias in gallente space the gallente navy (custums) will get medival on your wallet (and standing), same goes for Caldari in Caldari space.
EDIT: Maltitol beat me on the reply. Didn`t know that security +2,5 thing though...

Dog tags will not get you popped. They are illegal, but they have no penalties on their legality tab. They just can't be sold in space where it's illegal.
Compare that to something like Mindflood or other drugs with a host of penalties.
As for the sec status, do you have any proof or a source for that?

Sorry, but this is incorrect. The contraband flag on tags only prevents you from tradng them on the market within that factions space and stations. You have nothing to fear by carrying them in your cargo hold.
Narcotics carry a penalty that is inforced if you are caught carrying them in your cargo hold.
To see the details of what would happen if you are found carrying a contraband item, look at the Legallity tab of that item's show info window. It will specify what fine, standings loss, or possible ship distruction will be impossed if you are found to be carrying that item in that factions space.
