Down and dirty question for you experienced mission runners, just starting out in running missions which should my first priority, getting the ability to use T2 Guns (Lasers being that I am Amarr) or a T2 Tank with maxed cap skills?
I am currently sitting at 1.2mil sp, so I know that T2 is a long way off, but I am working on developing the most effiecent way of training up for success.

Tank imo. I fly Min and it is much faster to get a T2 tank than it is to get to any of the large T2 weapons. Not to mention that we need guns, missiles and drones.

For PvP, T2 guns. For PvE, T2 tank. You want both anyway _

Tank for sure. It is very easy to a T2 repper, especially if you are not flying BS's yet. Not all missions will need it, but those that do will be next impossible w/o a good tank. Even more important if you are flying Amarr, T2 reppers are more cap efficient.

Edited by: Pavachek Secundus on 17/09/2007 20:14:51 It can be argued that you won't need t2 weapons for missions until you're well into level 4's. T1 ammo is cost-effective for mission-running and as long as you're willing to shell out for meta level 4 weapons (best named with stats that are nearly t2), you'll do fine. However, I would still counsel you to take a more balanced training approach with a strong emphasis on tanking skills with some shorter gunnery/fitting/drone skills thrown in there for good measure. After all, you don't want to end up in a mutually assured survival situation with an elite NPC where neither one of you is able to break the other's tank.

Tank, 1) because it is easier to skill 2) because in PvE, survival comes before dishing out lots of damage. With a few exceptions, you can wear PvE opponents down with mediocre DPS, even in Lvl 4. On the other hand, some Lvl 4 missions have warpscramblers. if you cannot tank those situations, it gets expensive...

Tank.
You can easily kill rats with T1 named equipment, but their punishment is a consistent. Killing them faster is a good way to help your tank, but it doesn't stand on its own as a replacement - it still takes time to bring something down and during that time you're getting wrecked.
Surviving the damage first and foremost is a PvE player's calling. Once you have a tank that you know can survive the damage, play with your DPS output until they find a good balance. It's no good having an ultra tank and a sickly DPS - you'll be spending way too long on a mission. Finding the harmony between tank and DPS is step two of the process. If you find you're tanking way too easily, remove some modules and add damage boosters. If it's too big a change, add tank back on.
There's nothing wrong with warping in and out of a mission while you're still learning - especially when you're experimenting with a ship's capabilities.

This. Mission running is all about making the best sustainable tank you can towards the enemy's damage, then fitting for as much damage as you can without gimping that tank. -------------------------------------------------- ICE Blueprint Sales FIRST!! -Yipsilanti Pfft. If you have the cash or lp to buy faction gear I fail to see the point of learning t2 tank for PvE. I'd rather spend that time on improving my gunnery or other support skills. ---------------------------------- Be cool, be important, colorize!!! |

T2 tanking skills will also give you a better tank with any mod, so it is very valid to skill for a T2 tank. Also, by using best named guns, and faction ammo, it is possible to nearly reach the dps of T2 weapons. You lose out on some dps, as well as range usually, but the T2 tank is more important.
Also, just don't fit faction untill you're into L4s, if you need faction to do level 3s, you will just die horribly in level 4s. -----------

the logical skill progression for armor tanking favors it hitting T2 first well before T2 weaponry, and tank is way more important in PvE situations. -

In all honesty, if all you want is missions, neither.
T2 is inferior to faction equipment anyways and with the ease of access to navy equipment you'll upgrade your mission-ship in due course.
Yeah, as you struggle to make cash T2 hardeners was a decent improvement on my Raven but the CNR sports Gist X hardeners which do NOT use any of the T2 skills and the launchers have been replaced with Navy, also not using the t2 skill. With the faction ammo, even in PvP you are often better off without T2. As your question WAS posed from a strivtly Mission point of view, no. You don't need either, yes it is a cheap stepping stone, but there is no reason to loose your mission boat as long as you are half careful with it.

if you can get a faction tank before a t2 tank and just starting to do missions then ebay? or serious mining/market control?
repair systems level 4 and hullupgrades 5, and t2 tank where as t2 guns require secondary skills at 5, and small/medium t2 guns and spec skills at 4.

Ok, thanks again for all the replies.
I have looked a bit into getting faction gear, which I see as a reward from doing missions, but I also see the guy's point about getting the skills as they will improve any mod I use regardless if it is T2 or not. I.E. having armor rep skill as high as possible will only help me rep more efficently later on.
I will be trying my luck here with level 1's, and I know it shouldn't be to long before level 2's. Thanks again
