I recently lost cargo from a courier mission in a gate camp and was wondering if there was a way to get the agent to give me the cargo again or reset the mission. I know that in a kill mission that I could wait for the respawn, but this is a courier one.

What did you loose? I think some items can be bought off the market as trade goods, if I am not mistaken.

I think this is the point of collateral that they take at the beginning of the mission. I think you can just turn the agent down (once per every 4 hours, I believe, without standing loss) and get another mission, but if the cargo is gone, and you can't buy it or find it elsewhere, then you may be out the collateral you gave.

In this case, the pirates either looted the needed item for the mission, or it burned with the wreck. If the pirates got it, the only hope is trying to buy it back from them, or if it was a common item, buying it from market. If it went up in the wreck, well, I hope it was a common item that could be purchased on the market.
Failing a mission = loss of collateral if any and loss of standings with agent and corp.
The only way to reset a mission is through GM intervention, and that's not likely in this case. (They generally only do it if something went buggy on their end)

Thanks for the quick responses; I assumed as much. The cargo did burn in the wreck and it's not a standard piece of cargo unfortunately. It was a storyline mission which is the only reason I bothered to ask.

You only get freebees when declining to take a mission, if you have accepted it, you have to complete it or take the standing hit (on top of the collateral)

If you are lucky it is still possible to get the needed items, even if they are "mission specific".
For example I still have some 15 small secure containers from when the courier mission did required multiple jumps delivering and picking cargo and one of the small container for document delivery (those o,5 containers rensembling a small suitcase).
The hard part is finding the people with the right item, as even a "want to buy" contract has little chance to be noticed.
Best suggestion is try spamming the corporation or alliance channel of you corp/alliance. There is a possibility that some long timer mission runner has the right items from some failed or uncompleted mission.
