Hi all,
Not sure if a Dev will catch this but there is always the hope...
I recently read an article in Technology Review regarding the infrastructure behind "One-World" MMOs, and EVE was mentioned in it. All in all, a good article with good PR value.
However, the comments appended to the end of the article show just how disgruntled the community are regarding lag issues with large fleet engagements. These comments have turned what was a positive article into something that would not encourage gamers to try EVE.
Now, I am not a CCP basher as I reckon that the guys & gals at CCP do a damn good job. However, lag is an issue that the community finds incredibly frustrating. I was wondering what steps CCP have taken recently in resolving their server side issues?
I love EVE Online, and I hate it when it gets criticised but I cannot respond in the defense of the game as the criticisms are all legit.
Cheers

I think this posting summed it up quite well. The point that CCP were counting on increasing performance in a single core is fair enough. Since there hasn't been all that much of an increase in processor speeds for the last 4 or 5 years but the Eve codebase has been getting more complex there is a negative impact on capacity of each node.
That said, the complaints are not clear it is actually lag they are complaining about. It could just as easily be stutter, and that is another matter altogether. There is not really any excuse for the Eve client to stutter.

When it comes to fleet fighting sol, it ain't your holy grail of stutter . Its lag. Its either massively horrible or not. Recent fighting in the MJ system in the drone regions as an example. One of my combat pilots was frapsing some of the fight, and he had a very smooth load of the grid and responsive client. At the same time, my own client was hung out to dry not getting ANY info from the servers. Prior week the reverse case was true.
Fleet fighting without GM intervention to "harden" the node is a real issue with lag of data to ALL of the clients involved in the fight. Some get the information, others don't. Even WITH the GM's being alerted and the nodes ready, if the numbers get over 150 in a system, a jump in by one side is a disastrous occurrance for combatants on both sides of the fight.
The hope for trinity on the client plus need for speed initiatives is all we can hope for at the moment, unless of course CCP does some drastic surgery and switches to these bad boys + full broadband connection requirements.
