I was looking for a cheap ratting ship to use so that I wouldn't care if I lost one to a ganker. I am gallente so I read though the ship setups thread for the Tristan and the Incursus. I found several posts by people that said that they rat 0.1 in a tech 1 frig. Well, the destroyer spawns are totally..well... destroying me. Can some people that use a tech 1 frig for low sec ratting give me some advice? Here is my setup.
Tristan x2 Neutron Blaster's II x2 Rocket Launchers
Web, Cap Recharger, After Burner
100mm Plate, MAPC, Small Armor Rep.

Doesn't the Tristan have only one launcher hard point? I had a similar setup, but used a NOS in one of the high slots. Also used Malkuth launcher instead of rockets. Lets you start dealing dps on the approach.
I used to hunt low sec rats in a Tristan a lot, but the rats seem to have gotten tougher since then.

I suggest long range combat, since you can not go toe-to-toe with whole NPC-spawns in a frigate really well.
I would drop at least the 100mm Plate, and add up rat-specific resistance, if you want to stay with the close-range setup. Resistance gives you more benifit than the small addition of a 100mm plate. Also do you realy need Tech II blasters for low-sec NPCs? Wouldn't named guns, with less fitting requirments, suffice for the task? (You can still use faction ammo to get higher DPS and pay more ISK. ;-))
I did not fly a Tristan in a long time, but can you really close in fast enough with a tristan to be even of use with blasters? Incursus is the better blaster-frigate, IMO. --

I did similar ratting in a merlin, which has a similar layout.
I had to fit 2x standard launchers, which gave me the range to drop the destroyers. The time it took to close in allowed them to beat the snot out of me.

Edited by: Huurag on 19/09/2007 16:14:38 If you're having trouble with destroyers, try a rail incursus. You would spend less time getting in range, thus taking less damage.
3x 125mm rails (antimatter)
AB web/cap recharger cap recharger
small rep MFS/plate/damage control/CPR/whatever

In a frigate, you in fact shouldn't even be getting hit while ratting. I find that my (PvP setup) rifter can kill any low-sec spawn.
However, T2 blasters you will need on a Tristan, because BC-sized rats are boring without as much damage as you can cram. Low-sec ratting in a frig is a skill intensive thing, anyway.
Using faction ammo would be stupid, because it'd eat up all your profit. Regular antimatter would do the trick for gallente. You could carry a bit of extra T2 high damage ammo just in case you run into a faction spawn BC which is tanking you ;P

Yes, it should be. You can use an AB (which can be a bit of a pain when rats are 50km off), or you can MWD towards them and eliminate the whole 'getting in range' delay. Although for ratting, the Incursus is probably better at the same thing.

Incursus is probs the best ratter, more dps, faster. All that really matters.

You don't bother with the dessies unless they have a bounty worthy of a faction rat.
So. Incursus (Tristan needs better skills to shine)
3 x Anode Light Ion Particle cannons with antimatter
Orbit @ 1500m with guns and 1mn afterburner II on.
Now options are: Cap Recharger or Cap Power Relay if you need cap. Web if you want to stop it from moving, so you move in more of a circle than an ellipsis. Nano or iStabs for speed and turning circle to take less damage or increase agility. Lows: Small Armor Repper named or T2 if you think it worth it. Maybe 50mm plate if you think it's worth it.
Drone bay: Hobgoblin II (or ecm drone if you're funny, or TD-300 if you're even funnier, or...you choose.)
Never hit approach, and always start by flying at an angle until you're close in, to avoid getting big hits on you. I take out dessies first, then frigates, then battlecruisers and cruisers. If there are webbing friggies, I go to the next belt or aggro it and run, letting my goblin take it out.
hope that helps.

Edited by: lag kills on 19/09/2007 17:44:53 i would rat 0.1 systems in my rifter all the time. different ship but the technique for fighting them is the same. the only time you should take any damage is on your approach. if you warp in and you're 20-40km off from the rats approach at an angle to keep the transversal up. once you're orbiting the big spawns, they can't hit you. destroyer and frigate spawns go down fast. the big guys take a little while to take down, but it's not too bad since they can't hit you.
i just use a rupture now lol. ___________________________ not all who wander are lost. |

I've ratted in the Incursus and Rifter ... both work well. The Merlin worked when I tried it ages ago with 900k SP.

I'm using an Incursus myself atm fitted with light ions with AM, AB, web, cap charger, magstab and a small rep. I havent tried this with 0.1 yet, only as far as 0.2 but it works well enough for me so far.
The web probably isnt that useful and tbh I only really use it when tryng to keep the spawn close together so they have more difficulty tracking me. That and I think the blue glow is spiffy.
With destroyers I tend to avoid them if I warp in from beyond 30km or bookmark something close to them so I can get a closer warp in next time and then basically rely on my dmg output to pop em before they pop me. I actually find frigates more or a problem but that's probably down to my lack of gunnery skills and abilty to track them.
I really only use the ab for closing range although I do sometimes put it on mid combat if I notice i'm taking fire from a cruiser or something to help evade their shots.

A punisher setup with ACs work great too.
Pack the highs with T2 ACs and a small NOS, mids with abs and recharge (or maybe a scram), lows with T2 repper, DCU2 and EANMs.
The T2 guns and ammo give about a 7.5km range with about 70 dps, the NOS gives enough to keep the repper going and with the naturally high resists can tank BCs in lowsec without too much issue.
Surprisingly tough little ship.
