I would be happily surprised if they do update and diversify backgrounds.

We need more variety and higher quality backgrounds for sure, but please make them darker colors, like the greenish or blueish space. The red colored background is terrible on the eyes and looks like crap imo.

There used to be a map bug that you could use to make the background image disappear, leaving you with blackness, went a bit screwy when warping but otherwise I certainly felt that it looked a lot better. There's some screenshots hanging around somewhere that someone took doing it. Unfortunately, this seems to have been fixed now.
I think it would be great if we had the option to turn off the backgrounds, I dont think the current eye-mugging nebulae actually look like space at all tbh.

I have screenshots of this as recent as July 26th of this year. Haven't seen it since. Too bad. Another vote here for the option to turn backgrounds off, as if it will make any difference.

Edited by: Redpants on 20/09/2007 20:35:54 This is seriously one of the only things that somewhat bothers me and is noticable in game. Once you've travelled a few systems in this game you've basicly seen the whole galaxy. The only difference is color change in the gas clouds.
This gameworld is huge and I never understood why the variety in scenery was so absolutely limiting.
Here's an idea i thought would be cool. There should be space anomalies that are closer and farther away in the backgrounds depending on if you've gone jumps towards or away, for example. The list of things in space from nebulas to black holes is considerable. Yet this galaxy is devoid of this. I would love it if the gameworld itself was addressed in this new patch to make it a more real living and breathing place with personality.

well in actual outer space, the background is not very black, but FULL OF STARS... countless stars. it baffles me how poorly just about every outer space game renders outer space backdrops, either with far too few stars or way too many clouds, etc. even just simple space photos are far more breathtaking.
for awhile there was this map bug where after closing the map the star clusters would still be visible in the background. i thought it was a cool new feature at first. i still think it would super awesome if the background would actually show to some degree your position in the universe relative to other things...
~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ Take away the risk and it would make flying around in space utterly pointless.
Take away the flying around part and you make EVE into a space themed spreadsheet application. |
He's right. Twinkling is caused by the atmosphere. Or so I hear.
Edited by: Oedus Caro on 21/09/2007 00:43:12 Yep, they shouldn't twinkle. And as for plain black being "so last century", I don't think any of us would object to having lots of colorful splashes in the backdrop, so long as they were mostly unique and had deep, black regions in between them. Having to stomach the same reddish-orange explosion coming from every direction, or that oh-so-familiar-but-differently-colored cloud worm you find in almost every other system, is doing a real number on both the picture quality and my eyes.
It really is just about the fact that it's in -every- system. It's stops being cool the hundredth time you see it, and eventually it's just annoying.
EVE is supposed to take place in a stellar nursery, and if you look at the distance between stars on the map, all the stars are pretty close to each other. It would not be unreasonable to assume that there would be some pretty colors out there (the milky way is kinda pretty if you can actually get to a place that has little light polution - but its mostly dull blue - in the visible spectrum at least)
That said, if I was truely a pod pilot, I would be able to set filters on my camera drone, and I would try and maintain maximum contrast between the back ground and the overview and icons for stuff such as gates and ships. As it stands, in some backgrounds (fountain core IIRC) it can be very difficult to find anything if you haven't memorized the system. --- Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up every time we fail. - Emerson |
I too would love to see subdued nebula backgrounds. Even more I'd love a realistic one... starry background with little or no fill light.
Since Wing Commander, nebula have taken over space games. Each title seems to try to outdo the last. As a result space tends to look like someone left a box of crayons in the sun.
Space should look like space. Anything else kills the romance which first attracted many to this genre.
Consider:
Still considered the most ground-breaking science-fiction movie ever, 2001: A Space Odyssey utilized a realistic starfield background. The movies Star Wars and Alien followed suit, and were also landmark works in the field of visual sci-fi.
These days the television series Firefly (and movie Serenity) and the revisioned Battlestar Galactica have gone even further; not only do we have realistic backgrounds, but now sound during space battles is either subdued or missing altogether.
These companies took a chance, and it paid off. Your audience is more sophisticated than you think. We won't wander away if pretty colors aren't there to hold our attention.
Go look at the Zoic (Firefly and Battlestar Galactica) backgrounds. There is a cold majesty there.
Take a chance. Just try it out in a few systems.
See what the players think.
