After training the Thermodynamics skill you can overload modules to make them more "effective". The details for what happens for each module as it's overloaded are detailed in the items attributes tab. You can also overload an entire "rack", as in all of your high slots or all of your low slots. This is handy if, for say, you're trying to get a big DPS spike at the end of a fight, you can overload all of your guns or all of your damage mods.
Overloading can and will cause damage to your mods though. I don't use overloading yet so I'm not sure exactly what effect the damage has (if any) on the performance of the mods. From what I understand, one of the best uses for overloading is on webifiers and warp disrupters to get some temporary extra range on them. I'd imagine it could be handy for things like armor reps as well.

Overloading is the new "Heat" feature you may have heard about. Basically, it's bypassing the sa***uards and limiters on your modules in order to get more out of them. Overloading modules produces a LOT of heat which damages both the overloaded module and that which is around it in the rack. Now remember that you're bypassing safety devices on modules using megawatts of power. This is not a safe activity, so in order to do it, you need the Thermodynamics skill which requires Energy Managment 5. (Please, no flames or whines about the requirements here)
Each level of Thermodynamics reduces the ammount of damage taken from Overloading modules. (But doesn't elminate totally) _______________________________

Also, one of the more common uses is to overload Afterburners or MWD for faster catching of prey or "Oh Lord get me outta here" Overloading guns.....doesn't last too long and kills your own guns fast. Overloading single modules doesn't burn things out nearly as fast as a whole rack at once. Not every module can be overloaded. Overloadable modules will have entries for Overload Bonus and Heat Damage. _______________________________
