Today my PC crashed yet another time. Not EVE-related, hardware problem. After I logged back into EVE I found my settings reverted to defaults once again. So I'd like to hear something from developers:
1. Why does system crash cause configuration reset?
I have software development experience myself and I can't possibly understand reasons behind that. It isn't my hard drive - everything is fine except for EVE. So the only explanation I can come with - is that game holds configuration files opened for some reason all the time and unable to close them properly.
But why? Why would it have to work all the time with files containing audio and video settings if I change those once and forget about them? Why would it have to hold open files with UI configuration if I change Overview/windows settings maybe couple of times a day?
2. And why does game lose some configuration, but not all? Why one character gets back with anything intact and another has to set anything back from scratch? If it is possible to avoid corruption of some configuration, why not to avoid all of it?
3. Why something like half of all GM responses for any petitions are: "Clean your cache and settings!"
I could understand cache corruptions. It's temporary data after all! But if you know that most of problems people experience come from your cache, why not to deal with it somehow? Introduce some checksums and check cached data's consistency on start-up. Clean it yourself if it is bad. Why leave people with cleaning the mess that you are aware of?
I understand, that we like EVE not because of marvelous and efficient interface. But does it really mean you should concentrate on character's hair for true narcissists to enjoy their EVE-ning instead of dealing with bug-o-features that annoy a lot of people for quite some time?
Please, I would really like to know developer team's opinion on UI future other than cosmetic font changes. |

this happens in many games and applications. Its usually because the game/app was writing to the configuration file at the time of the crash, leaving the file 'broken' and corrupt.
When eve starts again it notices the corrupt settings file and just loads defaults instead.
You could make a backup of your settings configurations and then restore them whenever this happens. |

I named that reason. Question is - why does the game have to write all the time to configuration files containing settings I do not change? |
