OK I'm playing around with my first mining drones. I deployed 1 and it appeared to be mining away when some rats popped. Not having any defenses I warped out. After switching ships and dispatching the rats I came back with the miner. But alas, no drone. How long does it take to poof if I leave it at a belt?

When you warped off, any hostiles left in the belt engaged the drone that was left behind. Don't know exact numbers offhand, but it'd last maybe 10-20seconds. It's a real ***** if you're using tech II drones and have your client crash

Mining drones are fine for completely calm conditions, but you'd probably do better training a few levels of Scout Drones and Combat Drone and run a few light scout drones for protection while you mine like crazy in your ship. When/if you graduate up to mining barges, you won't be able to fit much in the way of weaponry on your ship. (only weapons that'll fit are smartbombs) A flock of 5 drones does make for some fast rat popping though. (and Tech 2 drones chew through rats like crazy) Just keep an eye on your drones and recall any that seem to be taking any real damage. (Mining drones have no shield and almost non-existant armor)

On the side, any prospecting interceptor or small ship wanting an "easy kill" off your mining barge would first have to contend with your drones.
I've seen Hulk's survive triple BS spawns (due to shield tankability) and take out both the spawn and the duo interceptor pair that decided to attack him.
Dont just look at scout/combat drones. Consider electronic-warfare drones like webifier drones or ECM drones. -
