Apparently some parents don't want to give this vaccination, which immunizes for all intensive purposes a woman against cervical cancer due to infections from STD's, because it might encourage their 9 - 13 year old daughters to have pre-martial intercourse.
Problem 1: I've gotten immunizations during the course of my life, for example tetanus. None of them have made me into superman, nor have they encouraged me to test the limits of the protection. Once again, in the example of tetanus, I do not routine stab myself with dirty metal objects for the hell of it.
Problem 2: One can still get STD's from ones spouse, so they are pretty much placing their daughter in harms way if her husband is a passive carrier.
Problem 3: Religion makes people stupid.
Problem 4: Why are 9 - 13 year old GIRLS thinking about sexual intercourse? Whatever happened to just playing house?

Unfortunately there are girls that think about sex that early...i imagine that most of them aren't going around sleeping with people but kids are curious and that's right about the time puberty hits anyway. That's not really something to worry about in my opinion.
As for your other points...yes, religion turns some people into ******s.

My fathers new partner stopped their child from getting the MMR jab because they are convinced it gave her previous child Autism. It isn't Religion that makes people stupid - it's ignorance but in many cases the two are one and the same.

i blame the media.
we all know the tabloid media thrives off our fear; feeding us a constant stream of scare stories, which we greedily devour over our cornflakes each morning.
what could be more horrific than people in a position of trust somehow harming our children, and us - the concerned parents - inadvertently being to blame for not fully researching the risks involved? tune in at 10 for the CNN special. etc.
immunisation jabs harm kids? maybe, but no more than we're going to **** them up over the course of their lives. um. This probably wouldn't scare the ******* **** out of me as much if my GF wasn't pregnant.
edit. the kid's getting immunised.

the mercury used to preserve vaccines very well could have had a part to play in that but i do agree that the benefits far out weight the risks. Though even with an mmr vaccine you can still get it... i was vaccinated and a few years later got the measles =P But back on topic i think the vaccine is a good idea its like not getting the hep a or b vaccine cus you dont think you'll ever get it... you can get hep a just from handling raw food =P -----------

The bitter irony is that he almost died of Measels around 5 months after he was scheduled to have it. Problem is that people fear what they do not understand. I do not understand much biology thus I am overly cautious with my diet - my mother is a dietition by trade so makes a point of laughing at parts of it Do they still use mercury? Just because people stopped taking children because of false fears spread by the media I can see them replacing the needles storage modules asap.

Actually, these same kids probably won't know how to use a condom once they reach puberty. Combined with the kind of sexual repression that evangelical Christianity fosters, they'll probably rebel in High School, sleep with a dozen people, and get themselves pregnant. They'll raise the child in a dysfunctional since they were forced to settle into a unhappy marriage of convenience (due to the social implications of having a child out of wedlock) and sprout about five more kids due to a combination of drug use, depression, and ignorance. Am I cynical?

nah you're not cynical, just shedding light on yet another reason why religion is FTL. also your post seems to have alarming similarities to a certain Mrs. Spears, whom I am told is a celebrity.

The thing to remember is Gardasil (HPV injection) ONLY protects against 4 out of 150 or so strains of HPV... any of which can turn into cervical cancer. I work in a doctor's office and we give this out many times a day.
Personally... I don't think I'd have my children immunized with it until a decade or so down the road... til we can see what unforseen side effects it will cause.

Are you suggesting that the medical establishment may not have done proper testing on a product it is pushing?
Did they run out of Beagles or something?

While I agree that I've read the injection protects against 4 of the ~150 strains, I believe that those 4 make up ~75% - 80% of the reported cases leading to cervical cancer. Even if I'm off in my values, 4 out of anything is still 4 more than your body was protected against to begin with.
As it stands, medical science can only do so much to help the human body. Its like training a guard dog by shoving half or fully dead burglers into their kennels. One out of a dozen so burglers might just get away and cause some mischief.

Hearing people whine about stuff in biology they really dont know anything about or understand. Some guy was talking to his girlfriend and wasnt going to get the flu vaccine becuase "i might get the flu from it"...

isn't a vaccine essentially a miniscule dose of an appropriate agent being introduced to the body in order for the immune system to adapt to fight it?
maybe his kid had AIDS or something.

Edited by: Skraeling Shortbus on 26/09/2007 16:30:40 it doesn't have to even be a live virus, sometimes you can just use the protein shell of it capsid or using killed virus's. there are though, some vaccines though that do use attenuated virus's (weakened / a-virulent or non pathogenic) virus's which still illicit the same immune response.
Sometimes you can have a side effect from it (an attenuated vaccine) that might make you a little ill, but nothing compared to say what getting a regular flu infection would do.
Flumist is one that uses a live virus, most of the vaccines are with dead virus's.
Which is funny becuase virus's really arn't all that alive to begin with.

Well, one could easily replace "alive" with "active", but seeing as its hard for living organisms to conceptualize that they are being invaded by viral dna strands.

Well, they're not alive due to the technicality of them being incapable of reproducing or surviving without a host. All things considered, they're pretty much alive though.

Personally im going to make sure my kid(s) have every vaccine i can lay my hands on, I had my first uni tutorial today, and the lecturer who took us, lossed a kid last year, due to a Superbug, that one of the kids at the school caught while in hospital who then passed it on. For some reason the lecturer's kid didnt have the ability to fight it off, and passed away a few days later with no other symptoms than a saw throat and some stomach aches.
Really puts medicine in perspective tbh, if our current medical prowess can be cirumvented by these superbugs we really need to look in another direction i think rather than just pushing out newer/"better" versions of the same drugs

The majority of manufacturers wont make the switch for cost effectiveness, or some other bs reason like that there was an article on the net about it a while back. -----------

That and an industrial-sized air purification system. Frosh share diseases like conservatives and liberals share insults.
