So, can anyone explain more about this? The forum search doesn't turn up much. Can one "create" links via code? (i.e., <item>showinfo:blabla</item>), or is clicking and dragging absolutely required?

You have to click and drag, it stops you linking items that do not exist ingame, however there is a way around it by using a web page to create show info links but they can't be dragged anywhere ingame at present :)
Example Show Info Page (note only works ingame)

well if you write down the name of the item and, highlite it and right click you can make an auto link to it.

Yup but only works for certain items, you can't for example link to any of the items listed on the page i listed above as they are considered banned from the auto-link :)
