just griping about afk cloakers sitting for hours in sov3 or higher for 15 hours now. Just give us something to disrupt proto/improved cloaking devices for 10 minutes or at least probe them out.

While I agree that we need means to counter non-covert cloaks or make them way harder to fit a sov requiring module is the wrong way to go about it. There are already enough overpowered pos structures that favor large alliances and blobbing, so no thanks.

Just make the cloak deactivate for 10 mins every constant hour. So true AFK griefers have to at least come back. But any method of decloaking or finding a cloaked AFKer can be countered by keeping the ship moving constantly. It would have to be a very accurate probe to find one that's moving. -- eve-guides.com POS, Outpost and Sovereignty info

No!
Cyno jammers already save you from capitals...ALL normal ships should have the right to challenge you though. Don't try to turn 0.0 into carebear heaven space!
I agree that all the work with outposts deserves some payback, but more modules harming the attackers is taking it too far! _______________

Personally I would like to see another solution. Make players in cloaked ships not show up in local. THat way you dont know they are there, and thus they cant afk greif you. TO make you feel pain they would actually have to really TRY to kill you, not just offer the threat.

I can't see the point in allowing anyone to play the game in 'afk' mode... I mean I appreciate the abillity of cloaked targets to be completely valid, I just deny that it should be able to be done as effectively afk as at the keyboard. That's like advocating macro mining.

Here is the answer. Not in local, not a problem. It's the Joo-Janta 2000 peril-sensitive sunglasses idea: If you can't see it, it can't hurt you.
Cloak engages, pilot name is removed from local. He is cloaked, after all!

Unfortunately if that happened there would absolutely have to be a way to scan for cloaked ships. It would be ridiculous and game breaking if you could have 300 people in a system with no way at all to detect them.
People would abandon low-sec and 0.0 wholesale, there wouldn't actually be any reason for people to grief, there would be no one there to grief. Think about it, someone flashes in local for 10 seconds and kills something only to turn on 'god mode' to hide from reprisal.

To be fair, if cloaked = not in local, that should mean that the cloaked pilot cant see local, either.

The whole scanning cloaked ships thing is problematic. I would say a good start would be a on-grid prob (ie 500km range) which can scan out claoked ships. Sig radius would play into chance for hit while specific cloaking ships (Cov ops, SBs, Recons) would be excluded.

I like the idea of cloaking having a time limit if you're stationary.
If there is no movement for a random time between 30-45 minutes then the cloak runs out....if you move then your timer resets. 30-45 minutes is time enough to eat your pizza, go to the loo and get back, but short enough to stop you going to bed or a movie. Making it random also makes ensures movement before the minimum time, but if you happen to be a few minutes late, then there's still a chance your ship will be there.
I fly Cov Ops and it's great, but safe spotting and going to bed should be discouraged.
An algorithm similar to optimal + falloff could be used, with a 100% chance that your cloak is active after 30 minutes, reducing to 0% at 45 minutes.

lol, if cloakers get a local boost, then everyone will fit cloaks. We're trying to NERF cloaks, not boost them to the point where they're standard fittings. I can foresee 200 man gangs moving into a station system right before DT, and all cloaking during the day, then out comes the poor freighter, and local jumps by 200 instantly with little lag, and uncloaks a 200 man sniper fleet ^^ -----------

Cloaking doesnĘt need a nerf. Cloaking devices have been nerfed enough anyway. I think the afk cloaking thread that turns up on these forums occasionally is probably the same one or two players that are incapable of dealing with something that is a legitimate game mechanic. AFK cloaking is a myth. The so called afk cloaker is more than likely at the keyboard and yes he might be watching local thatĘs up to him.
Cloaking devices should render you completely undetectable from and type of identification whether visual, sensors, probes or local.
You should be able to opt out of the local channel if you wish if you are cloaked but if you do this then you shouldnĘt be able to see local at all.

1. NOT IN LOCAL CLOAKED NEEDED TO HAPPEN LIKE 3 FREAKING YEARS AGO. META GAMERS ARE LAME X100M4
2. I SPENT THE BETTER PART OF 4 MONTHS TRAINING COV OPTS TO MAX AND ANOTHER 2 MONTHS ON THE SUPPORT SKILLS, I EARNED MY DELTA BLACK NAME AND MAYBE WE SHOULD LEAVE THAT ONE ALONE STATUS. IF YOU WANT TO TRAIN SPECIAL PILOTS IE PLAYERS LIKE ME THAT CAN COUNTER OTHER CLOAKERS SURE, HOWEVER A MOD IS SO LAME IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN IN A BILLION YEARS
3. AFK CLOAKERS, HMM ITS GREAT IF I NEED TO USE THE REST ROOM OR IF SOMETHING COMES UP, HOW MUCH DO YOU AFK IN YOUR STATION AND ABOUT HOW MANY HOURS A DAY ?

AFK cloaking is not a myth, we do it every day, all the time, all day long. We will leave pilots cloaked and in a SS in a neighboring system where we are or where we want you to think we are. It is a very common tactic in 0.0 to disrupt mining and ratting operations and it works. The beautiful thing is you don't know if we are afk or not, so you have to take your chances. So you saying AFK cloaking is a myth is just BS or a bad joke on your part.

It isnĘt bull but despite the fact that you have justified your afk cloaking there are cases of so called afk cloaking where the pilots have been very much near their keyboard and cognisant of the activities in the system. I have been the victim of such accusations.
I personally endorse afk cloaking as I consider that your prerogative. I am happy that clever pilots like yourself use this legitimate feature to disrupt mining and ratting in 0.0 systems.

6.0 - What restrictions are there to a cloaked vessel? Whilst cloaked you are under the following restrictions:
1. You can't Target anything 2. You can't warp (Except with the Covert Ops Cloak) 3. You move slower (Exact speed loss depends on the cloaking module used) 4. You can't Launch Drones 5. You can't open cans 6. You can't collect loot 7. You can't Activate Smartbombs 8. You can't use FOFs 9. You can't change Ammo Types 10. You can't use a MWD 11. You can't activate a docking sequence 12. You can't jump through a Stargate 13. You can't activate Armor repairers or Structure Repairers 14. Essentially you can't activate *any* modules whilst cloaked. 15. You can't reload weapons or charges 16. You can't perform a scan probe analysis
8.0 - When can't I cloak? You can't cloak when within 2Km of another object. You are also unable to cloak when you are targeted by another player or NPC, this can be a real pain if you are trying to get out of trouble!
Be warned that there is a bug with targeting that will effect the cloaking device: If you are targeted, and move out of range, unless the targeting ship attempts to activate a module on you, they retain the target lock. This means you can be 500km away or more and still targeted by another frig. Rendering you unable to cloak!
9.0 - Can I be forced to uncloak? Yes. If you get within 2km of ANY object you forcibly uncloak. You will also uncloak if a smart bomb hits you.
I DON'T THINK YOU CAN NERF THIS ANY MORE, ITS BEEN TURNED INTO A ROLE THAT ONLY HIGHLY SKILLED DRIVERS CAN HANDLE. 16 NERFS ISNT enough for you? Please drop it.
Game balance is pointless why? Because someone will always be better than you and that skill translates into crybabies saying how its unfair and over powered. IT never o I lost to a skilled playerą

Edited by: Auchtor Geist on 28/09/2007 21:37:58 Okay, I'm a little new to this game, but let me get this straight. People are whining because someone is sitting in system, semi-undetectable and might go after them? Learn to safespot and be in lowsec for crying out loud or go back to empire. Or take some protection with you.

I recommend adding a weapon known as an asteroid launcher.
The idea would be to launch a huge asteroid (lets say a radius of about 100k) which would travel in a straight line. Then when a cloak ship got close to the asteroid (2k) he would be de-cloaked due to the proximity effect.
Actually take out the asteroid launcher part, add in a new item, call it a tachyon web, let it launch in different widths and peroids of time (one that's 10k accross but 300k range, another that's 100k radius but 20k range). This wouldn't nerf cloaks at all, but give the possibility for a group of ships to actually find a cloaked ship. Currently there's no real way to decloak a ship.
But i still want an asteroid launcher.

Agreed, cloaking does not need nerfing. But here's an idea to think about anyway - maybe someone had thought of this already:
What about make cloaking effectiveness deteriorate over time? This would make it possible to still escape warp bubbles, but make perma-cloaking and 24/7-spying a bit more difficult.
Now the cloaking wears off if any target gets closer than 2km. My suggestion: Increase the radius by 500m per minute. The radius would reset when you decloak.
This would increase the calculated volume (area of space) where a hostile would have to exist to reveal the cloaked ship.
time: <1 min, radius 2000 m, volume 12.5 km3 time: >1 min, radius 2500 m, volume 19.6 km3 time: >3 min, radius 3500 m, volume 38.5 km3 time: >10 min, radius 7000 m, volume 153.9 km3
The radius increase could be more subtle of course, or start increasing later. And the cloaker could always quickly decloak and cloak to reset the timer and the radius. I think this would make hunting cloaked ships a bit more exciting, because perma-cloakers would be tempted to reveal themselves for a few seconds every now and then, or at least warp elsewhere for a while to reset the timer - making them perform more tasks instead of semi-AFK'ing.

Heres a suggestion. Leave cloaking devices alone they are nerfed enough as it is. I think that cloaking devices need improving. Cloaked vessels should be able to leave the local chat channel. I also think that they should be able to move faster when cloaked too.

* time limit: let the non-covops cloaking devices mounted on non-covops en non-recon ships use some kind of fuel. Not much, like 60 trit per minute or so. Doesn't have to be much, and you should be able to find the fuel anywere, eg tritanium. when your cargo is out of fuel, you uncloak.
or, alternatively * disable the directional scanner while cloaked. Then there's no difference between a cloaked ship in your system and that same ship in a neighbor system (except local). Both nerfs only for non-covops and non-recon ships of course.
