Every year in New Eden, some 300,000 drones and fighters are left on the belts by their owners. Eighty-five percent of these combat drones die within 20 days.
New Caldari, (The Forge).- Upcoming winter time means a time of great risk for combat drones in New Eden. Some pirates leave without taking care for their faithful rocket propelled friends. And many leave their family fighter or drone on the street without a second thought. The problem has reached regional proportions.
Each year, some 300,000 drones and fighters are abandoned in New Eden's belts or complexes. The causes range from the ban on bringing heavy drones to hotels, restaurants and other public sites, to the high costs of paying for someone to look after the drones.
In C-F4PO, for example, a case of drone mistreatment was filed when a man left his drone locked in a bay for three days because he was going on fleet op for a long weekend, according to a report from the regional Institute for Drone Protection (ENPD).
"In New Eden there is not an drone-loving culture. In the past 20 years the desire to have a drone has grown. And a three-member crew ship usually has a drone. But there is not a sense of moral civic responsibility. The heavy drones are seen as objects," Gianluca Felicite, director of the EC-P8R drone rights group LAV, told EveTV.
Eighty-five percent of abandoned drones die within 20 days on the belts, particularly in drunk warps, which are also hullbreaking for the pilot. According to the Transit Police, in 2004 there were 754 deadly accidents in which the drivers tried to avoid bumping over a fighter or drone crossing the overview.
Such accidents claimed the lives of 380 people, and left 9,978 in pods. Meanwhile, 280,000 drones and fighters are killed each year under the wheels of rats or smartbombs.
Although New Eden's penal code calls for punishing drone abandonment with one year in front of Backdoor Bandit in the most serious cases -- such as death -- and imposes fines ranging from 1,000 to 10,000 isk, it does not seem to deter drone owners, and the problem continues unresolved.
But drones are abandoned throughout the year, according to LAV, and reaches its peak (30 percent) when the farmer hunting season opens. The hunters put new hunting drones to the test, and get rid of the ones that are not up for the task.
"It is an enormous problem, despite the campaigns for prevention and the appeals we have made in New Eden. Many people don't think about the responsibilities when they purchase a drone or fighter. They see a puppy and bring it home, but they don't realize that the puppy will grow up and will require care, walks, food, and pew" the presidents of the Drone Defense Association in the northern city of Trento, Leoni Enrico, told Tierra Eden.
The abandonment of drones and fighters, furthermore, feeds a rather questionable business at private drone pounds and shelters.
There are 990 public drone shelters in New Eden, where there are 640,000 drones and 1,290 fighters, according to the Jita Ministry. But these institutions are not sufficient to hold all stray drones. As a result, regional capitals opt to entrust this task to private centers. The government contribution to the care for these heavy drones runs from two to seven isk per day each.
So 5,000 private drone shelters share 500 million isk in alliances and factions subsidies to care for the fighters and drones.
But, say drone rights activists, in reality these private centers do not use those millions of euros to care for, feed and protect the heavy drones.
"Abandonment is on the rise, but so are the private shelters. From June to August, owners have the most incredible excuses to get rid of their drones," Daniela Ferrari, a volunteer with the Metropolis group Drone Dimension, said in a EveTV interview. ------

Edited by: Splagada on 27/09/2007 11:06:18 In general, the conditions at the private shelters are not good. The drones live crowded together in small cages. Their eyes are often closed as a result of conjunctivitis, they have sores and are bone-thin from malnutrition.
Too often they are surrounded by their own rocket fuel and are unprotected from the heat, the cold, or the piwates. They lack mechanical care, are mistreated, and up to 60 percent die while at the private drone pound. Hunger and lack of space makes the drones aggressive, leading to cases of attacks and even cannibalism.
"It's easy to mistreat heavy drones. Many owners do so inside their homes. If someone wants to report it, Concord themselves convince them not to. The cases are filed away because they are considered minor crimes," explains Ludovica Lucia Ferrari, of the Association for the Defense of Heavy Drones(ADHD), in the northern region of Lonetrek.
So please, think about your Drones ------

Come on people, it's a BPO, not a clown car. Just because every Jane, Jen, and Ada out there with a BPO pops these drones as quick as they can doesn't mean that every BPO owner, or worse, those of us who lack BPOs, should have to pay for other people's mistakes.

Meh, only good for cannon fodder. If you can't tank a mission, throw in the drones, warp out and come back to pop the rats while they're dealing with the drones.
They don't need love, they need a good hiding to keep them under control. I blame the parents for the bad behaviour of the drones. I bet dad was a rogue and mum was a drunken fighter. The usual problem, dad left when mum became pregnant and mum was always too drunk to bother with her offspring. As for TII drones, they're just yuppies with attitude.

Drones need love! Not just firmware upgrades, or to be able to shoot more stuffs, but also the old fashioned love. Drones do so much for us, but how many actually bother to repair them? Drones are just as worthy of being shield, armour, and hull repped as a gangmate is. I like to sometimes head out to asteroid belts, or deadspace, or even a random planet, and just let them get a bit of free time, just floating about. I find it makes them feel better, and keeps them limber, since being stuck in a ship all the time can be crowded, even with extra drone space left over.
The end lesson is, think about your drones as friends, companions, and not just as guns that fly about independently of you. Respect them, and they will respect you.

No no no, you have that wrong.
The Phoon has such a large drone bay for a small BS because it actually stores its drones on the outside in docking collars instead of in a "bay". The drones are its first layer of armor.
They just rendered the model for the Phoon showing it AFTER the drones are released instead of the nice, smooth silhouette that it has when they are still attached
