Hello, Now that i lured you in let me explain what this is all about.
I want to buy a new HDD (possibly 2 for RAID), i need a mid range one not those uber expensive ones. Considering this and all the evil marketing i thought i'll start a little survey to see what the community has to say.
Which midrange SATA hdd would you recommend and why?(it makes very little noise, i doesn't overheat, it is very fast... that sort of thing)
Thnx... and excuse the trap

I'm a fan of Western Digital, Samsung and Toshiba drives. While the WD drives are a bit noisier than others, they are VERY long-lasting and tough. I've been running some WD drives for several years now without a single failure. Samsung and Toshiba are also nice. Very quiet, and a good price point.
I'd stay away from Maxtor drives. Yes, they are quiet, but they are more expensive, tend to have smaller buffers, and are generally less durable. I've gone through no less than 10 Maxtor drives in the last 7 years, while similarly sized WD drives have continued to run and run.
So I'd say, go with WD as a first choice, then either Samsung or Toshiba as a second choice or if there is one on sale at a better price point.
Good luck!

Agree with bish on WD hardrives. I also like Maxtors very reliable and extremely quiet. Other than that, in your case, I would just check seek time against what you wanna pay for the drives. If you are raiding for speed, this may give you a touch more. _______________________________________________ RuntimeError: ChainEvent is blocking by design, but you're block trapped. IT SHALL NOT!!! MWAHAHAHAHA (CAPS is cool) :P
On a more serious note:
I am looking for a compromise between speed and noise (i have an allmost pasive cooled system). I don't want a noisy hdd but also i don't want the slowest of them all just because it's dead quiet. I heard good things about a hitachi model (HDS721616PLA380)
Thnx for the input so far.

I've never had problems with Seagates ( though some say I'm lucky ) IBM 40gb drives have been failing on me in the past, but I was told that was a bad model.
I hear alot of good things about Maxtor, they are very silent.

Maxtor, Samsung, Toshiba and IBM HDD's have failed on me within warranties (though this was before some sort of acclimatization thing that made them last longer in high-humidity climates like here in the tropics)
I still have a perfectly-working Seagate from the same era, still workng in my old PC, and still going strong after a good 6-7 years worth of abuse. -

Seagate and WD are the only HDDs I go with, I've had a lot of back luck with maxtors so I don't even buy them anymore.
I have a 150GB WD raptor and it's not very noisy at all, I was actually surprised. It's about as loud as my case 150mm case fan. (which is quite) Only time it makes any audible noise is if it's doing a lot of searching, or defraging, which then it makes a slight clicking occasionally.
I have a 500GB Seagate that I got for around $90 a few months back and it's very quite as well, even when searching and defraging. Not sure how well it will hold up with time, but if it goes as well as my old one. (6 years old and still going at it) it shouldn't be a problem. ---------- I gave up on sigs. As all the beatings from the abusive mods are starting to hurt and leave nasty bruises. |

Simple answer to this one
Samsung 500GB HD501LJ Spinpoint T, SATA300, 7200 rpm, 16MB Hard Disk Drive
These can be had for less than ú70, if you're looking for a cheaper HDD one they come in smaller sizes.
I'm now looking at building myself a new machine, and i'll be using at least one of these. (My current spend totals ~ú1,700 but i do need to buy new everything) =============================================

Seagates were the harddrive to own back in the day. I still have a 28 gig fireball that runs like a champ. Their newer stuff is crap.
I shouldnt say that,(This goes for all harddrives) the models that are made to go into production for computer desktop companies are the sucky harddrives because the computer companies want to get them on the cheap to cut costs.
For laptops, if you get a travelstar from IBM, toshiba, and hitachi, I guarantee you are going to get a new hd in 3-4 years. _______________________________________________ RuntimeError: ChainEvent is blocking by design, but you're block trapped. My 1st bit of advice to you is rethink RAID if you want to keep something in a budget. Eventually your RAID 0 will fail and you'll lose everything unless you have a RAID 1 set up as well. You'll probably see burnout within a year or 2. So if you're trying to keep on budget and just want a RAID 0 be careful, you might be better off buying a raptor for your OS, and a Sata 3.0 for your storage.

Late to topic, but anyways:
Never had a problem with a WD or an IBM Deathstar (Deskstar) drive. I have a WD Caviar WDC33100 3.1gb HD from.... 96? 97? Regardless, it still runs. No data loss, no bad sectors.

Hi, The trick in my opinion with these old hdd (i still have a 2.5 gb hdd from '96 that i think runs... haven't started that old pc in a while now) is that, as with almost all thing made in the "old" days, they were built to last.
One can't really compare products build in '96 with ones built in '07.
Only ppl that work at IT stores can really know which hdd is reliable (as they sell a lot of them and can easily make a statistic of which model comes back as defective more often).
Cheers.

I only buy Seagate Barracuda ES (enterprise class) hard drives for my PC builds. I've never heard of any of my installed HDs going bad.

From what i've read in reviews from magazines and owners these are fast, quiet and cool.

Yeah but stuff is more expensive in the UK anyway, so the price difference probably cancels out somewhat

Seagate and Samsung, though I prefer Seagate.

Thnx.
Got the HDD yesterday evening and installed my system. It was a very bumpy ride (had nothing to do with the hdd, but everything to do with a moronic service guy who can't plug a damn board in it's slot)
I finally installed everything, now i just have to download the .NET framework so my ATI control center will work.
The HDD is quite silent from what i could gather.

Samsung / WD all the way. I myself use one 150GB Raptor and a bunch of 500GB Samsung drives. Ofc if you have the money just buy one or two pairs of 150GB Raptors. Or, you could buy an 500GB Samsung, make a 15-20GB partition on it and put the OS there, it'll be quite fast. Then make a 1-4GB partition (depending on your RAM in your config) and put the virtual paging file there so this way it won't get fragmented. Also don't put anything on the first partition aside from the OS and stuff that won't install elsewhere. Defrag sometimes; enjoy the speed. If you want them in RAID, it's virtually the same, only it will be even more quick if you do a striping or more secure should you go with a failure tolerant setup. Pure win.
