For blasters, highest damage per second, alpha strike, and range are in this descending order:
Neutron (best) Ion (good) Electron (okay)
However, there's a catch to this - the gun type is only half the equation. Damage modifiers are the other half - say you can either fit a full rack of ions, or a full rack of electrons and a magnetic field stabilizer. That mag field stab increases damage and rate of fire, and makes your electrons stronger.

The tracking speed also decreases as the guns get bigger, so if you want a better chance of doing more damage to cruisers with large-sized hybrids, go with electrons.

Mind you where i state those ranges they are long , medium and short for blasters. Every other weapon in the game can out range them save t1 rockets. -----------

Those ranges are backwards. Neutrons have the longest range, whereas electrons have the shortest. At the edge of falloff, for frigates, this is a difference of 1.5km (not counting skills) between light neutron and electron blasters. At the battleship level (again without skills), a neutron blaster cannon outranges an electron blaster cannon by 6km.

also neuts are hard to fit and electrons are easy to fit while ions are mediacore.
