They did, immmediately upon seeing the horse archers... which was a grave mistake. The Roman leader in the battle was an arrogant social general. As soon as they were locked in place with the horse archers running in a circle around them, heavily armoured cataphracts (think pre-medieval knights) charged up and cut them to pieces.

The horse archers in question were also armed with bows more powerful than those found in Europe (which have to survive rains, so are hardier but not as fine) and could penetrate legionary armour.
Hehe, now you got me wanting to play Rome: Total War again...

Even if you counter them, they just disengage and run away. They so should have been nerfed.  ------------------
