What is 'computer game addiction' really? Is it:
An addiction, similar to a drug addiction?
An impulsive habit, like impulsive gambling?
A form of escapism?
This issue is briefly discussed in Wikipedia.
My personal opinion is 'computer game addiction' is a form of escapism. As soon as the real life problem is solved, balance is restored and the hours of gaming become sensible once more.
What is your opinion?

Does television addiction exist?
It's nothing like a drug addiction (the real kind). It can become similar to impulsive gambling but is still quite foreign because there is no mental grip on fortune and security. Of course gaming is escapism, that's what it is and always has been.
Gaming provides psychological and physical rewards within the mind and the activities can become addicting just like most any activity can be. The degree of addiction depends on the mind involved, it can seemingly not exist or manifest as if there are chemicals involved.

You can be addicted to anything.
Look at your corp, I bet there are at least 10 people that spend every moment of their free time playing eve. _______________________________________________ RuntimeError: ChainEvent is blocking by design, but you're block trapped. it is an escape, just like for me at least, art is an escape. to some people, rare as they may be, even work is an escape. My personal form of escapism? Being useful, like cooking food being a good host, giving people rides, and listening to peoples stories. EvE is a wonderful way of doing this same thing when you can't in real life, log in, save someone kill someone, have other people think your useful, but I'm odd, so I might not be the best judge. ----------------------------------- I'm working my way through college target CCP need...more room... |

Anything that one finds enjoyable can be habitual, to the point of addiction. Its not the same type of addiction as alcoholism or smoking, where one introduces an external chemical into their system through an act. Instead, gaming addicts produce their own chemicals biologically. Just as one gets excited asking out the prettiest girl in school in our youths, doing something that we percieve to be difficult/challenging in a game will release the same euphoria.
The difference between an addict and someone who just likes games is the fact that you can walk away from the stimulous and acknowledge that enjoyment is superfical; that is, nothing you do in the game is life altering or of enough significance to sway from the "happy end" of gaming into the "rage and violence due to failure at gaming" end.

I play computer games because I am bored. I play computer games because I dont wish to spend a small fortune on X-Box or WII. I play computer games because TV is total pants with only the odd programme worth watching. I play computer games after I have done the housework, fed the kids or put the kids to bed. I play computer games because some games are sooooooooo good all you want to do is see where it ends. I play computer games because it stimulates my intelligence and stops my atrophy

Yes, yes it do, I was addicted to WoW for two years, until I at last got bored and nowdays I'm not addicted to anything, not even EVE, but I might not know exactly what an addiction is as the only thing I'm addicted next to that is sugar :)

Things can be psychologically addicting as much as physically addicting, EVE is no different than television or gambling. ---------------

Playing an addictive computer game is a fantastic feeling. I actually had a quick addiction for WoW for a few months (I know, im embarrassed) where I played it for like 15 hours per day in order to level. Once I got to level 60, I was sick of it, and I didnt feel like doing the Battleground points-based arcade gaming, so I left.
But I understand the addiction, its very strong actually. I also had a addiction for Eve back in 2003 for about 10 weeks, when all I did was play all the time when I could. I even had the character mining while I slept.
Not sure why we get addicted.. I guess its because its more fun than our lifes.

How can you even ask that with a straight face on the forum of a MMO?
I would think the "hook" with EVE is slightly different to most MMO games and revolves around the risk of loss. Hearing people talk about it... well, to my untrained ear it sounds pretty similar to gambling addicts

Let's face it. Computer games is merely societies latest scapegoat for all the bad things that happen. Before computer games came along television took a lot of pounding from the idiots out there.
Don't get me wrong. It is possible for some to get addicted to computer games, but it's been overhyped by the fear mongering media.

I read that certain Asian countries like South Korea have entire treatment centers for the gaming addicts, sort of like treatment centers for drug and alcohol addicts. I'd say there's a psychological component (trying to escape real world troubles and responsibilities, may be suffering depression, etc.) and physical one where the addict feels high from accomplishing something in game that releases certain chemicals into his brain. So I think gaming addiction is more like alcoholism. According to some studies about 1 in 10 people who play mmorpgs are addicts. guide to game time codes |

I used to be a complete psycho with starcraft. I refused to lose on that game but eventually stopped playing it when it was pointed out how I acted while playing it.

It's nothing like alcoholism. Any chemical addiction deals with a foreign substance that creates a specific response from the body that usually can only be filled by the given substance. But there are plenty of ways to get the same reactions in the brain that come from accomplishments within a game. --------

i was an addict, and believe i am still to some extent. starts out as 3) escape then 2) habit then finally 1) what you rely on
it took me a long time to figure just part out.
my main problem is like lofty there's jack all else to do, and i have found the best solution is to replace your eve time with other interesting activities. personally for me, i started going fishing and going to an athletic club. a lot of times i'll think, "no i don't feel like going out" and inevitably i wind up playing eve or surfing the net because it's right there.
even for the entire bit last year where i had no computer, it did not really cure me because i did not fill the void with other activities. have found that this is the key to overcoming it.

To be honest, I wish I could get addicted to computer games. Life is so friggin boring. I've tried most sports and other various hobbies and I got bored of them all after a few weeks. If I was addicted to games then I could play EVE the countless hours and enjoy every single minute of it.

People can develop uncontrollable urges to do anything they consider pleasurable. But there is a definitely line between someone who enjoys something and finds it hard to put down and someone who develops a mental disorder where they have an uncontrollable impulse to continue the activity. So... for most of us, gaming is simple escapism. For a tiny fraction, it could become an activity that they are unable to escape from. Of course, since addictive personalities are addictive personalities, if a person wasn't addicted to computer games, they are still prone to becoming addicted to other activities.
Note though that these sorts of "addictions" are different from drug addictions. Drug addictions are usually caused by actual changes in brain chemistry that causes the victim to want the drug. It's not a mental disorder, but a physical one. So comparing drug addiction and gaming/gambling/****/etc addictions is comparing apples and oranges.

Edited by: Rialtor on 02/10/2007 14:37:02 Ehh, I think you guys are confusing addiction for something you just like to do. Playing a game 15 hours a day wouldn't necessarily make you an addict. If you had 15 hours to spare and you thought 15 hours of game playing was the best way to spend that time that's not an addiction. An Addiction depends on reliance. I'm sure they exist, but I don't know any gamer than would have physical impairments if separated from a game for too long. On the contrary, you just might forget about the game and laugh about how much time you wasted. People just enjoy doing things they find fun for long periods of time.
Would you be a basketball addict if you played for hours each day? Is a writer and addict for writing for long periods of a time? Is a painter an addict?
Can addiction happen? yes, but just because you play something a lot doesn't mean you're an addict.
But In the end perhaps we all are just entertainment addicts.
