...why our ships can surpass the speed of light, barely batting an eye to intergalactic travel, yet they can't shut their armor rep/shield boosters off automatically once they've done their full job.
I could care less if it gets changed either way, it's just something that seems silly.

fairly simple.
so much work was put into intergalactic travel that the engineers have not had time to.

It's not a bug , it's a feature 
It matters for armor reps , it lets you start a repping cycle before you receive armor damage. Useful if you can perma run the rep.

Look at your computer screen. Now shout to yourself "FANTASY!". Open your window and shout "REALITY!". Rinse and repeat till the men in white coats turn up and/or the neighbours have broken your windows |

Because you being the pilot, used an override on the automatic shutdown, to make it auto repeat.
