I have a question about the price changes: Why do you let europeans pay that much ???? Hey ok the VAT might be a thing but before your changes it took me about 10,50 - 11,00 Euro to play one month. That is much but ok, because eve rocked the house. As i had an account pre Gold-status i can say the price was from the first day at a bad dollarstatus and you knowed that. But what you do know that is *meeep* your customers. Sorry for that hard word but it is a change of about almost 50% more cost (10,50 -> 14,95 ~ 43% more expensive). Do you think your customers will be happy ? Do you think you will count again 7,250 Users ? I can understand the VAT and anything else. Another thing to consider is the %tual change from EUR to USD. It is about 16% more cost for a non european customer. so is the VAT about 27% ???(this text was written on a base of 1 month subscription, the rest on a 6 months subscription!) I will now come to a mathematical view:
There are about 14.000 customer. 7000 inside EU, 7000 outside. you will get with the best subscription (the 6-months thing) 153.300 USD a month.
After the price change it will be 7000 europeans paying 76.650 EUR and 7000 outside EU paying 76.650 USD. Ok this is a difference of about 1.5 millions ISK (Icelandic Krones) or about 22.000 USD. You will get ~ 14,6% more Icelandic Krones.
Please think of that i ever thought of the best subscription! The one that has changed only from USD -> EUR for us europeans.
So Dear EVE-Marketing experts (you proudly introduced them with the newsletter): Do you really think that makes Eve growing ??? I can't imagine that it takes more than 150.000 USD to keep eve running a month. I can't imagine because i know that Icelandic wages are not that high. I can't imagine that the server (located in the UK) costs that much and i can't imagine that the VAT makes that high pricing.
Believe it or not but I hope CCP will give us some more information why they changed the subscription that way !!! Because all of their arguments are not really counting: - sick USD (it is since the beginning of eve that the USD is sick and financial experts said it will stay..) - european VAT (i can't imagine that a VAT is that high... but i must say i didn't find anything about how much the VAT is)
2 arguments that not really count for an effective price change of min. ~27% (6-months subscription). Sorry but not with me!

$154,000 a month is $1.8m a year.
I'd be interested to see what this actually gets spent on. _____________________________________________________________ War is much too serious a matter to be entrusted to the military. Georges Clemenceau (1841 - 1929)

Hey guys... i mentioned it. read the complete article. I can understand that the VAT increases the prices but that much ?! It is really ok to raise the fee a bit.. but a bit is not between 27% and 43%. :) And the dollar was at eve beginning between 1 EUR -> 1,15-1,17 USD.

Edited by: Stront3h on 18/02/2004 13:02:21 VAT in the UK is 17.5%
I'd also like to know where my email informing me of the price increase is? If I wasn't a regular reader of the site, I wouldn't have known until my next CC bill turned up...
Btw is Iceland part of the EEC? If it is I can understand the inclusion of VAT following the change in laws and it maybe that we have to pay at Iceland's VAT rate. If it's not part of the EEC then why am I paying it?
It would appear that Icland is not a member of the EU EEC (whatever we're calling it these days). As the payments are being collected off-shore why are they subject to EU/EEC laws, anyone know? |

If a company does buisiness in Europe, then they must charge their European customers VAT. As you know, the servers are in the UK and thus they must charge the UT rate of VAT.

What the money is spent on? I will tell you, primarely they are used to pay off the GAINT loans that were required to develop this game with ZERO income for several years.
ACtually I am surprised they are making money, and they might nit be making money yet. They at least will have to keep growing for a few years before breaking even in my estimate. The price change is mostly to increase revenue, no sexy explanations can deny that.
I will gladly pay, the game is worth it :)

Ok to come back.... when they charge us the 17,5% VAT it will be ok. but that leaves 25.5 higher one-month-charge and a 9,5% higher 6 month charge. Why are only european customers charged the 9,5% ?? Because the argument with the USD doesn't count here. If we pay in EUR 65,70 it would be about 54-55 euros excluded the VAT. that is 69,85 USD.
So why do we have to pay more than anyone outside the US ?
Please give us some information why the subscription raised and what you do with that. Eventually we can understand the reasons.

As far as I'm aware there was a post a while ago stating that CCP had already broke even..
Quote:
from ZDnet UK VAT changes On 1 July, a new EU directive came into effect requiring all Internet companies to account for VAT on "digital sales". The law adds a 15 percent to 25 percent levy on select Internet transactions such as software and music downloads, monthly subscriptions to an Internet service provider and on any product purchased through an online auction anywhere in the 15-member bloc of nations.
The VAT tax is nothing new for some Net companies. European dot-coms have been charging customers VAT since their inception. Their overseas rivals, though, have been exempt, making foreign companies an obvious choice for the bargain-hunting consumer. Freeserve has lobbied furiously for the past two years to get the loophole closed, saying its chief rival, AOL UK, saved $249.7m (ú150m) in tax payments over the years.
Affected companies are handling the new tax load in a variety of ways. AOL Europe, for instance, relocated its continental headquarters to tiny Luxembourg, one of the EU's cheaper tax regimes.
If your company is already based in the EU then you should already be paying VAT
Btw Iceland is not a member of the EU it's a member of the EEA not sure what the difference is, but looking at the above could someone verify if we should be paying VAT?
