My mouse is busted, and I need to buy a new one (and a better one than this Packard Bell piece of poo that has broken). All suggestions welcome!
Price range somewhere between ú20 and ú35 preferably, Optical, not wireless (<3 wires), and with all the various buttons and features you'd expect. Must be available on-line in the UK.
Go go! ------

Well here's one. The problem seems to be that most mice are wireless. I too prefer corded mice.
The one I use is probably 4 or 5 years old and an early Microsoft optical. It has extra buttons either side for back and forward etc. __________________________________

Too many wires? The Logitech MX Revolution is awesome... and you charge it on it's holder between uses, and the battery meter helps a ton too

Edited by: SoftRevolution on 30/09/2007 17:11:40 I'm sure there isn't actually any perceptible delay in response involved in using wireless mice these days and I'm sure one wouldn't actually run out of batteries mid-game all the time but I'm still not chancing it :/

I tried a wireless mouse once but didn't like it much. It stopped communication while I was in the middle of a fight in DAOC which resulted in my death. I thought it was the batteries but it still didn't work even after I swapped em.
I don't need to buy the OP a mouse, I've got like 3-4 spares

I'm most tempted by the MX518. The G5 seems to be only a slightly redesigned (and less popular, according tot he Amazon reviews) copy of it. Won't place an order yet though. They don't deliver on Sundays anyhow, so I can afford to wait for a few more hours before committing myself.
Its not that I can't stand wireless or anything, I just see it as a bit pointless. Seeing as my mouse never goes more than about 3 feet away from my PC case, why would I need it to be wireless? The day I need to access my PC from the bottom of the garden is the day I look for wireless peripherals ------

Basic Logitech corded mouse with wheel.
10US$
Have had it for the past 8 years, and still going strong as heck.
Its newer brother that's optical is good as well but if you really want to splurge cash on a mouse... -

I have an MX1000 which I got when it first came out. It's served me very well since then, and I've had very few problems with it being wireless. The wirelessness has been completely awesome for me as well. There are enough wires around here as it is.
I'd just like to point out though that my version of the mouse is a really early one which I got down some random shop in London. No other MX1000 I've seen, including the one my brother has (which hasn't had any problems at all) look like this one, with it's sexy dark paint job and completely different surface. It being such an early version (I know it's early because all the photos of it looked like my one before they all changed to the current look) probably accounts for some of the odd problems I've been getting.
My only real issue with it is the charger, which is rubbish, and can be a pain in the arse to get it to work properly. Doesn't matter too much though as the batteries last for bloody ages anyway.

I just bought an MS Comfort Optical Mouse 3000 and it's pretty good. PC World, about ú20 so you could no doubt get cheaper online.

I'd go with either the MX518 or the G5.
Some will say the G5 is better because it uses a laser for movement tracking instead of the usual optical system, and it has 2000 dpi while the MX518 has 1600. I have both, and to be honest, I can't notice any difference that comes from the extra 400 dpi, both of them handle great in all games I play.
I do prefer the G5, however, for 2 minor reasons.
1 - The laser doesn't make any visible light, so you don't get that intensely annoying red light when you're moving the mouse around.
2 - On a few surfaces, the MX 518 will not work very effectively, having trouble tracking movement. The G5 however, works in pretty much any surface I can think of, with the exception of glass. This shouldn't be a problem if you use a decent mousepad, though.
As for disavantages in relation to the MX 518, the G5 has 6 buttons instead of 8, so if you use lots of buttons, particularly for browsing, the MX 518 might be a better option.

The 2006 Logitech MX Revolution California. Less than a hundred were made. I spent three years restoring this Mouse. It is my love, it is my passion. It is so choice. If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up.
When I got this my G5 went into the glovebox of the car for housecalls. The freewheeling scroll alone is worth the price of admission. I thought I'd be married to a wired mouse forever too, but this one is seamless. It'll easily run two 8 hour EVE sessions, and just webbing about the battery lasts closer to a week. It charges completely in the time it takes to go to the package store.
Logi's assignment software is a bit limited, though. Make sure you look for the third party Uber SetPoint package. ----- TANSTAAFL
When I engage these coils normally I do about 2x10^6 dps. But I try to avoid that because people, entire populations, like die. So I try to keep it to about 4x10^3 dps. |

Get a proper gaming mouse (like this clicky)
This is what i'll be getting on my new build (which i'm just finalising the details on).
If you want a cheaper option you can get either the 1600/1800 dpi variants (also in a range of colours) =============================================

that orange/black logitech one has little removable 'gaming weights' in it that you can configure yourself for increased precision/balance etc.
throw them away, and you've got yourself a nice mouse.

Avast complained about a trojan in http://81.95.149.76/sp/index.php when clicking on that link... I'd suggest not clicking on it, in case it's not a false positive.
Back on topic, I'm using a logitech mx500 mouse atm. When this one breaks down, I'll probably get the newer version of it.

This being the original and a legitimate thread, it was caught in the housecleaning. Apologies to the original poster.
One warning to those who would start spamming variations on this subject again- it would be highly inadvisable.

This man speaks truth!! I bought one of these last year and its perfect. It doesnt feel too bulky; which i find the logitech ones do. It glides very well over most surfaces; consider getting a razer gaming mat also it makes a lot of difference for detecting every mouse movement. You can change laser resolving profiles on the fly so you can have high and low movement detection at will, plus you can create your own profiles. The cable has about 2 metres length to it. Only fault to it is you have to pay extra for mouse weights, but then again prolly dont need that for something like eve. Plus that yoyo site seem to have best price usually around ú50.
EDIT: Yeah the lachesis looks very nice. Good Price on the lachesis here. Out of stock atm though
