Hi guys/gals,
I'm mini, and just started mucking around w/ drones on my Rupture. i found that i kinda like them. ALOT. So i wanted to train up some drone skills and go nuts. I was looking at various drones, other than combat, specially, EWAR drones. I had just watched a fight betwixt a Hurricane and some Battleship. The Cane launched some drones. Yada Yada Yada, kicked the BS's ass. In local, the BS pilot was calling shenanigans. The Cane pilot said that he used EWAR drones. That little story may answer my question, but is it worth training up ECM drones, and Sensor Dampner drones etc... of combat drones. How many ECM drones would it take to break a lock or prevent a lock on me? Or should i focus only on Combat drones? What skills would benifit ECMs to make them better? I'm a complete drone noob.
Thanks for the replies

1 skill to train, but ofc you need the other drone skills to operate them.
Electronic Warfare Drone Interfacing. Rank 5 skill. It gives 3000km bonus per level to the operating distance. iirc
Well worth the time spent, taking it to level 4 tbh.

I do believe you meant 3000 meters/3 kilometers and not 3000 kilometers :D

Are the ECM drones good enough to break someone's lock on me? What would be a good combination of combat and EWAR drones. I plan on cross training for the Myrmadon (SP?) so i'll have somewhere in the lines of 12 medium and 1 light or whatever combination.

Edited by: Elle D on 03/10/2007 02:20:16 Drones are a Myrmidon's DPS, so you won't want to use ECM drones instead of Ogres(for example). People commonly use Ewar on the Myrm with 3x Sensor Dampeners in the mids. I guess you can put jammers in there but it's not popular(Jammers require use of the lows, which would take away from your tank which is so good on the Myrm)
p.s. I've heard ECM drones are overpowered but never messed around with them.

I think ECM drones are worth while. I've had some decent success with the small one's even, although that success diminished when I tried it on BS, but solo against a BC or a HAC/cruiser is just fine. And luckily for you, you can fit 5 light ECM drones in a rupture ____________________________________________________________ It should be illegal for anyone else besides Chuck Norris to quote himself |

Thanks for the Replies everyone. Oorah.
Here was my plan then. Get Mym, equip w/ 5 med ECM drones to break locks, maybe a sensor dampner or 2 the rest combat drones. Stack some Med ACs (since i want to be able to get my drones back, and arties, while long distance, would probably make me lose control of the d's) armor tank, f**kknows what else in mids, standard stuff i guess, web, scram, ab/mwd, maybe some shield things. I'll fire up quickfit and give it a whril. I was thinking, with lots of ECM drones out there harassing the opfor and not allowing them to lock on me , then i don't have to worry too much about taking damage. Did it get the gist of the ECM drones correct? then i can sit back, send several hundred rounds of ammo downrange with 6 T2 Med Autos plus my fighting drones. Don't know, maybe a pipe dream. stil not used to flying Big ships. I'm a ceptor/AS pilot mostly. Just getting tired of being Jumped and having my sh*t blown up from under me.
Again, thanks for the replies.

I'm a little confused about the myrm setup. If you are using dampeners on the ship, then they will have little effect when you are as close as you will need to be to use anything other than long range guns (which get no bonuses on the myrm). Thus, I would think (though I am far from an expert) that dampeners + combat drones is the way to go - you stay far away and let the drones do the killing. If you use ECM drones to jam them, that is your full drone alottment - it kind of sounded like you wanted ECM + combat drones out together, and even though the ship can hold that many, 5 drones is all you get. I may have misread.

you know, you're right. I wasn't thinking about max drones out. I was thinking all 12 drones outside. DAMN. OK. Hell. I'm guessing what you say makes sense, ie. sensor damps and full combat. What about loading up ECM drones on the Rupture, since that is in-your-face combat?

I think the point to understand is tht if your ship is a drone boat, dont gimp your drone damage by making them ECM, which is at best only partially effective unless you're flying a specialized ship.
But...ECM drones with a ship that does high-slot gankage is a wonderful idea. Non-specialized drone ships only do so much dps with drones anyway, so why not try ecm?

Of the EW/combat utility drones only the ECM drones and to some extend the neut drones are worthwhile.
Everything else gets rather useless by stacking penalities. Although webber drones "kinda" work in small numbers, but die very fast.
Oh, and ECM drones are right at the other end of the spectrum, they are way too effective.
To compare, a throax does around 33% of its dps with its drones. Or it has a 40% to jame another thorax if he uses ECM drones instead. This sounds a bit imbalanced, although not be much.
The real kicker is however that to get that dps you need over 10 times as much SP in drones as you need for the ECM drones. EW drones have pretty much nonexistant SP requirements.

While at the end of the day, combat drones are the best bet for any myrm pilot, ECM + Damps are a really effective combo.
Dampeners will increase the locking time of your opponent _significantly_, so if you can break his lock with your ecm while you are dampening your enemy, he may be looking at a 20+ second lock time on you. Which is a lot of time to pew pew.

Hey guys, haven't been on lately b/c We had a network crash at work, so i've been elbows deep in getting that back up. As to the age of my character. Its actually my Alt, which is around 7.9mil SP. 6 mos old or so. So, yeah, pretty nubblet. I'm a little OCD with learning all i can about something, so i'm sorry if i'm beating a dead horse. And, no, i don't have a Test server account, so all my experimentations (read: loss of money/ships) are in real time. There is some good info posted, and i thank you for that. I'm going to have to Digest it all. I think at this point, i'm going to train up some ECM drones to 4 and load em up in my Rupture. Since i will still need to train up Gal. Frig 4, Gal Cruis 3 and BC. anyway, and i can already lose....errr fly my rupie and the ECM, according to Aramendel, is quick train. After that, i'll beef up Combat drones and then move toward myrm. I can't afford the damn thing anyway!

Ooh! nice to hear that ECM drones are worth their place in the drone bay. I read many places that EW drones were worthless due to stacking penalties. I'll have to try them out.

EW Drones are the best thing for your cruiser dronebay, assuming it's dronebay is not it's main weapon (read: Do not use on Vexors/Arbies). Say what? |

i thought of another question. Do ECM Drones Stack? For example the vespa ec-600: 1.5 Strength. Do 3 of those stack to equal 4.5? Also, do your skills influence the jamming strength of your ECM Drones?

Some do, some don't. The ECM ones don't, but the sensor dampeners and tracking disruptors will. I think they are stack nerfed though so the 4th and 5th drones don't have much of an effect.

So is that how the ECM drones work? by stacking up to, say, 4.5? as you kill them, then strength goes down? Or is it redundancy?

No no no. ECM (Read: Target jammers) do not stack. They have a set strength and their chance to jam is based on the sensor strength of the target ship. Having multiple drones will give you a better chance of jamming them, but the strength is not cumulative.
Tracking disruptors and sensor dampeners are stack nerfed, but each individual drone will continue to reduce the effectiveness, just like multiple modules would. However, the returns past the 3rd drone would be almost unnoticable.

ECM drones rock they r great when ur in a hurricane/harbinger/or drake to use against BS other cruisers and the like one thing they hardly ever jam are Command Ships but otherwise they r great dont use them in a myrm use T2 ogres other than that id say use them

Correct. Rather than stacking you just get 5 more, albeit weaker, jammers pounding on the target ship. He who fires the most ECM mods...

no that's not how ecm works. dont know the formula, but it's chance based on jam strenght and sensor strenght. getting 5 drones one someone gets 5 times a 1.5 jam strenght on him, not 1 time a 7.5 chance .. so if the drones have, say, 5% chance to jam the targets, you'll ahve 5 times 5% chance to jam, and not 1 time 25% chance. seems the same though I know ... ----- GIEV custom ship paint jobs!
