There's a couple benefits to a Territorial Map in the vein of Joshua's or the short-lived Stahlregen/Kalralahr maps. 1) Superior aesthetically, particularly useful for non-Eve players or new players. 2) They can reflect the political and military situations -- who's territorially invading who in what region, for example. The problem with Joshua's map is that he was pretty poor at the second, at least in the last year that I've been following it. It was frequently full of inaccuracies, many that lingered for entirely too long. There's definitely still a place for a map like that, it just takes a LOT of effort to keep updated regularly, because the map itself isn't automatically generated, and because you have to keep up with what's going on beyond just sov in every single 0.0 region for it to have any value beyond the generated sov maps.

The political information (who's allied with who, and what areas they claim to hold besides of where their POS are) are omitted purposefully, though nowadays as the 0.0 is a tad more crowded, the influence map is pretty accurate, and can even trace wars, as long as they are wars where systems change ownership. (Paladin had this neat feature shading the area that had its sovereignty changed, I'd love to have it on one of the current maps.)

I concur, even though I have the influence map I liked Josh's map for the reasons listed above.
