I am new and have 14 million ISK, I want to do production. Tell me how I should spend my money to get into a profitable manufacturing business. Any links to good guides or skill reccomendations would be welcome. Thanks.

Start small and work up to large items. A normal first BPO is in ammo. It's a nice way to make some constant money flow. Look around in systems and try to determine what ammo types people would use for agents in the system. Then look at the market to see if there is a void that you can fill. Usually there is. I after that I would purchase minerals and start your first production. I would make around 50k-100k of the ammo. After that has ran and you put it on the market, you can research your BPO to get better mineral and production times.

I am browsing the in game market and it takes alot of work to caclulate what would be profitable and what wouldnt be profitable to make. Are there any external resources like pre-made spreadsheets or calculators that work well for figuring things like this out?

There are 5 components to any successful production business:
1) Skills - especially Production Efficiency - buy and train these 2) Minerals - work out if it's better to spend your time mining, or your money buying them. Personally I'd rather buy them and spend my time missioning to get my standings higher - see item #4. 3) BPOs or BPCs - I'd go with BPOs for ammo first. They're relatively cheap, easy to make and everyone needs ammo (well nearly everyone). 4) Standings - work some missions to get your standings up with NPC corps where you want to manufacture, this will reduce your refining taxes and rental fees. 5) And last but certainly not least is a market.
Of these, #5 is THE MOST IMPORTANT. You don't want to get stuck with a lot of goods you either can't sell or have to take a loss on. Look for a place where a particular product is highly overpriced and try undercutting. Buy some ammo cheap elsewhere and ship it in to undercut the sellers. See if they react and how they react. Do they pack up and move, or do they undercut you? How low will they go before they stop undercutting? This is Market PvP and it's vital to your operation. I'd suggest trading various items first, ship them in and see what the market is like. Once you have a market equilibrium, see how that fits with your manufacturing price.
Once you've chosen your first manufacturing item, buy the BPO and research it (or buy a few, research can take a while to get an available lab slot). Then buy in your minerals and start manufacturing.
This is not something you can rush. You'll probably need a few days to do your intial market research, then a couple of weeks to do your ME research on your blueprint. Manufacturing on a raw blueprint won't be profitable in most cases. You can shortcut this by buying researched BPCs off contract, but be very careful. Blueprint scams are fairly common and can be tricky to spot for the untrained eye.
Cheers Falka

Here are two calculators you can use. I'd suggest though making your own personal spreadsheet which you can update with material prices at any time - Grismar build tool - Battleclinic build tool
