As in the Avatar on the right?
I've entered the settings and made him my default character but I just get the black page with the exclamation mark.

Maybe if your character is recently born? Or perhaps you've done a portrait change?
Might l also suggest doing this (#4), my portrait didn't change in game or on the site until after I did this. I have done a portrait change.
Edit: Just do this. 8-)

This is perfectly normal. The portraits are updated in batches every now and again, rather than individually. When the next batch is done, your portrait should show up.

As stated before, avatar portraits are done in batches in a dedicated render server. IIRC they mention that the same machine used for rendering is also sometimes used in content creation, though I have no link to back this up.
Considering that there's a massive patch coming in November, its a safe assumption that avatar portraits on the forums have taken a back-seat in terms of priority.

 that's sweet to read 'cause I was worried that (even after deleting the local cache) neither this forum avatar nor my eveMon portrait (eve API) showed the portrait swap I paid for.
Any piece of information regarding these portrait batches updates would be welcome.
