Edited by: Cashflow Broker on 06/10/2007 10:34:58 As the title says I am kinda looking for those articles,
Why do you ask? Well, because next week I have a presentation with a school mate of mine.....he does the negative effects of gaming, and I am talking about the positief sides.
I remember reading a sh*t load if articles about these 2 subjecs some time ago...but I cannot find any of those articles back(yes...I used google )
So, could any of you fellow eve-players help me out?

Lazy.
Well I'd look at the case he is going to be making first.
I guess it's going to roughly break down into: Health Aggression in children Addiction Disruption to studies Problems with socialisation
On the health front, this has some links about gaming helping recovery from various treatments. You could also mention Penny Arcade's Child's Play charity there too.
Nintendo spring to mind too with their Wii and "Brain Age" for the DS.
This too.
Aggression in children is a big one but I'm not sure the studies in that area are hugely conclusive.

edit Links removed because I don't know if you're after scholarly articles or not. Also because I CBA doing your homework for you.
On the health front there are various studies linking gaming either to general improvements in health or suggesting that it helps one sort of recovery or another. You could mention Child's Play here and the Nintendo Wii (I did find links talking about a general improvement in health for general gaming but I think the Wii is a much better example). There's also mental health. "Brain Age" for the DS.
Aggression in children... well the results are far from conclusive on this one as far as I can discern. My social psychology textbook points me towards this article which you might find interesting. There's even research looking at whether cooperative games improve prosocial behaviour in children.
Gaming addiction... well they recently made a point of not classifying this as a disorder. I lumped "disruption to studies" in here because if you're at school the two seem to go together. You should be able to find examples of games helping general problem solving skills as well as imparting specific educational information here. It's not just "serious games" either. I'm sure you could try and suggest that historical games help the student understand a given time period better.
Problems with socialisation... I bet you don't have to look far to find articles on socialising online with other neckbeards and the more social / prosocial nature of games these days. Gaming used to be a solitary pastime but now MMOs and the like are steadily taking over. XBox Live might be another good example.
So... there's some ideas. Go hit up Google or your institutions ejournals.

About the game addiction thing, I can tell you is just a bunch of wifes overreacting. I have timed (I really did, with a 9.99 stopwatch from wallmart) how much time I play video games and how much time my wife watches reality shows. Her TV addiction is greater by a 350%.
I guess that 50 years ago, anybody watching that much television would have been considered as 'a person with a problem'. Now everybody does it so it's ok. Same thing with MMOs. Give them 40 years and you will see everybody and their brother playing online everyday and it will be the norm so it's gonna be ok.

I've read a few articles that mentioned some positive aspects. Hand-eye coordination, helped people with spacial relations, encourages quick and rapid troubleshooting. Also it depends on what type of "game" it is, look at the benefit of those brain games to elderly people. There's actually alot of positive, and very few negative to it. The negative is just created by a sterotype of people that do not understand imo. Like the introduction of the TV for example. People just seem to see value in books for some reason. Like reading a smut novel is some sort of educational tool.

tbh all this means is your not addicted
there have been cases where people have played games so much that they have ruined their lives alot like drug addicts. Games can be addictive hell i used to play for 18hours a day at one point. luckily for me i got bored of that much gaming so stopped. in most cases i think just smacking the people in the face a fewtimes would make em understand they need to stop and get their lives back together. but i just favour tough love Here comes the sig.............

Games are addictive to people with an addictive personality. If it wasn't games, they would most likely have gotten themselves onto something else, be it smoking, drinking, or heavy drug use. (- Dev Protective Shield. My sig is invincible! -) |
