I dunno. Newer stuff seems to be a bit crap if you ask me (Seriously avoid seeing Resi Evil: Extinction at any cost) --------------------------------------

Well, I just finished watching 28 days later and 28 weeks later. They're pretty dark-future apocalyptic themed. Also, episode 20 of heroes! --------------------------------------------------------------------

Apparently it can't be bad enough for me to stay clear, just watching The Day After and that's some cheese right there.

Edit: I'll add more as I think of them.
12 monkeys 28 days later 28 weeks later Children of men (not strictly POST apocalyptic, but it's good anyway) Day of the triffids (is that a series or film? I can't remember tbh)
edited for bad speling...twice
Day of the Triffids the film was not bad, but bore absolutely no resemblance to the book; dumbed down for the USA and turned into an early action movie. Still worth a look though.
The BBC serialised DOTT and did a much better job, keeping closer to the book.
It is available here and now that you've prompted my memory, I shall be ordering a copy for myself.
Incidentally, for those of you that thought it was science-fiction, Triffids are in fact free-range in many parts of Britain, although nothing like as agressive as depicted in the book.
They are semi-nomadic and can cause problems as a full grown Triffid is quite weighty and can write off a car driven into it.
With this in mind, the Highways Agency has taken to placing signs like this to warn where you might be likely to encounter them.
The next revolution won't be televised; it'll be pod-cast. |

The Day After is so cheesy because it was originally made for TV but its still pretty good imo. If you like that you should also look for When The Wind Blows and a BBC program from the 80's called Threads. They are both about the outbreak and aftermath of a nuke war from the perspective of ordinary people.
When The Wind Blows is very upsetting (at least i thought so) and the last sections of Threads are some of the most disturbing scenes I've ever seen. Basically the breakdown of civilization to the point where the kids can't even speak proper english anymore. -----

- Escape from New York - Blade Runner (not post apocalyptic exactly but a dystopian future) - Brazil (another Dystopia...helps if you are on drugs watching it too) - A Scanner Darkly (weird) - The Handmaid's Tale (some similarities in plot to Children of Men) - The Quiet Earth (very good) - Metropolis (hyper-old movie but a classic)

IIRC Blade Runner takes place after "World War Terminus" or that might just be the book.
Battlestar Galactica is set primarily after 12 planets have been nuked to extinction. The Matrix is set in a rather post apocalyptic setting as well.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Stephen King's "The Stand" yet. The book was made of win and the mini series is pretty good as well. Afaik its about 6 hours in total, so extreme long movie would fit it better imho. Basically deals with the survivors of a 99.9% deadly plague that kills off most of the human population. Go watch, should be worth it :)

Post apocalyptic doesn't necessarily mean dark... Appleseed is post-apocalyptic but definitely not dark.
If you want dystopian, how about Soylent Green?

I may even be tempted to say Battlefield Earth was better cos of the better graphics) Dark Angel. TV series (good, worth watching) The Day After Tomorrow. Movie (more a disaster movie but good)
Now I have deminsteated my ability to find some bad sci fi I am going to go

This was actually remade. On the Beach (2000).
I never saw the original. Indeed till you linked I didn't know there was an "original". The 2000 version is good though. Probably not the kind of post apocalyptic the OP is looking for but worth a spin.

Agreeing with this. The series is brilliant, but do yourself a massive favour and read the book.
