Too much lately people have confused Tech 3 cruisers and Tier 3 battlecruisers in conversation. It comes far too naturally to call them both "T3" in shorthand conversation. We need a better solution, a convention that everyone uses.
Tech 3 ships are going to remain "T3". They were the first that got the title, and deserve it. Plus, nobody refers to tier 2 BCs as "T2 BCs". People hardly refer to them as any more than simply "battlecruisers". However, tier 3 BCs are in a class of their own, separate from the tier 1 and 2 BCs, so they deserve a special designation. "Tier 3" is clumsy and requires 4 (FOUR!!!) keystrokes for the word "tier" and an extra one for the space -- an utterly unnecessary waste of our typing effort.
Reducing it to "T3" works, but only when it is contextually clear what you are talking about, to avoid confusion with T3 (strategic) cruisers. Removing the T's capitalization from the BCs is a possible solution (t3 vs T3), but many people won't be assed to adhere to that, particularly in very shorthand stuff: "hey bro i gccd in my t3 2day n had xpensive lossmail"
Another possible solution is using an extra letter (as much effort as that might be). "Ti3" or "ti3" for indicating tier 3 BCs. Makes them sound like fancy calculators though, or titanium molecules.
What do you think? Any innovative solutions from the community? |

Actually BC3 is pretty good. Its easily extensible to any ship type and its very specific.

I also like the TR3 convention. I cuts across all classes and most people that knows about tier 3 will make the link.
R3 is also ok, but may take a few more brain cycles before someone makes the link to tier 3.

Huh, I didn't expect this much good discussion, honestly. I made the OP while sleep deprived and slightly loopy, but re-reading it myself, it's a very valid question.
The best suggestion I've heard so far is using TR or Tr as a prefix. "Tr3", for someone who doesn't know what it means, leads them to pronounce it out loud in their head: "tee arr three". "Tier 3" almost says itself. |

For content, I personally like the idea of "BC3" to represent "Battlecruiser, Tier 3," because it follows a couple of conventions that I find mutually attractive. First, it follows a military-style naming convention by which the noun precedes the descriptor; second, it allows for the inclusion of other ships that also have multiple tiers. You could call a Tier 2 battlecruiser a BC2, a Tier 3 frigate a FF3, a hypothetical Tier 2 destroyer a DD2, and a Tier 1 battleship a BB1 or BS1(depending on whether you wish to use the designator used in real life navies or the simple abbreviations we've adopted for the game). T3 and t3. So a tornado is a BC t3. This will work fine until there's a T3 t3.
If you want you could also define the actual race, and maybe use - as delimiters. That's a Minmatar tier 3 battleship
Only problem here is when we're talking about classes where there's more than one ship, assault frigs as an example could both be a jaguar or a wolf, but in those cases we can add the first first letters of the ships name Caldari assault frigate t1 Hawk.

You can drop the dashes and refer to tier by x instead of tx. I.e. CAF1HAW. Of course, if you want pure shorthand without minding a little ambiguity, then you are just left with CAF1. However, there are just 2 assault frigates per race so you could arbitrarily assign tiers to them. E.g. let CAF1 refer to Harpy and CAF2 refer to Hawk. Then everything is precisely defined while shorting the designation from 11 characters to 4. Frankly, noone would bother with an 11 character designation when they could just type Harpy or Hawk instead. |

I recommend CCP remove the tier distinction and then we won't have to worry about it.
All the tier system does is make many ships hopelessly gimped and never flown. |

I have a memory of reading that it's easier for most people to remember series of numbers and character in twos or threes. As an example you have the classic police radio codes but also ip numbers. It's a whole lot easier to remember 87.237.38.200 than 8723738200.

I like that. Well done sir, I shall implement that immediately. Of course, I will need a reason to talk about either one though. If you bring down a giant, you're a hero. If you kill something weak-even if it has to die-then you will endure contempt. |
