Yesterday i tried my hand at a much vaunted and hated profession: ninja salvaging. I did this mostly out of curiosity and following my principle of ''eve is a pvp game if you want to get ahead in this universe you must do your best not to work hard but reap the benefits of other players hard work''.
So with this in mind traveled to Dodixie in my shiny malediction and purchased a new ehm what's it called, oh well an amarr frig capable of fitting a recon probe launcher and some probes 5 au and respectively 10 au probes as my skills don't allow for better ones to be employed.
My first find:
After making a bookmark at a resonable distance from all objects i started scanning for drones and got a result after my first scan: myrmidon and a drake running a lvl3 angel mission. Could be better but what the heck. I bookmarked one of the wrecks and off i went for my salvaging ceptor. The two players seemed unaware of my presence at first as i quickly went through the wrecks, they were busy clearing the room but then they started shouting quite coloured epithets in local about me, my corp and my maternal anscestors. They also stopped fighting for the duration of my presence sitting there idly for about 10 mins. That sure helped. Having salvaged all the large-medium wrecks I decided went through to the second room bookmarked there and left to find more targets while they made some more wrecks for me.
Second find:
This proved to be an abandoned and closed serpentis mission. Pretty quick to salvage but with little gain expept the items i took the liberty to steal. Later on i would come to regret this.
My third and fourth find:
By this time i devised a system: I would bookmark all interesting results with my scanning frig then board my interceptor to check them out making notes as to which results are worth salvaging. Having found 4 such results i got in my interceptor to check them out. The first one proved to be dismal as the wrecks had already been salvaged and only 1 freighter was still present there. Desilituined i decided to chill at the mission spot while i took a look at the market, failing to notice that the hauler belonged to the same corp i had stolen from a mear 10 minutes ago (yes i was still flagged). Lo and behold a vexor cruiser warps in a few minutes later. He starts targeting my interceptor. Then nothing. This was of little consequence to me so continued browsing the local market. The pilot kept targeting me....he eventually decided to deploy drones. At this point i was wondering what the he wanted. I insta warped when I saw which corp he belonged too.
At this time i decided to go back to my first lvl3 find, which was had been completed. This time there only was a destroyer there, which i beat to all the good wrecks. His corp didn't take it lightly and went on to make threats such as wardec'ing (like I care). This grim fate could be avoided for a payment of 750 million isk.
How about my third and forth finds?
The second contact proved to be an empty serpentis mission, empty as in the missioneer warped out and no wrecks in sight but full of not so friendly battleships.
The third one was a two room angel lvl4 full of nice juicy wrecks which i began to salvage. I was half done with the first room when an exequror warped in and started salvaging too (no doubt the owner). Having salvaged all the battleships i went to the second room and left the cruiser to his own devices.
The fourth and final find was also a lvl4 mission, this time blood raiders (JACKPOT!!!). The mission wasn't quite complete yet and the missioneer was salvaging as he went but this was a golden oportunity. As a side note i found the mission by scanning drone a hammerhead I drone ...
All in all these four finds netted me around 15 mil in salvage in one hour of hard work. My luck then dried up as i spent 1 hour with no notable results.
Reading local on the other hand more than made up for my missfortune.
Just because you are able to undock a ship doesn't mean you are able to fly it. |

And any tips on how to better perform my trade would be also welcomed. I don't suppose there's a guide on ninja salvaging?

Edited by: Kayna Eelai on 08/10/2007 16:02:24 welcome to my world.
just wanted to tell you that if you are lucky, you can make (or save yourself) quite some money, if you happen to find abandoned T2 drones ;) i use to find plenty of em all the time, hehe.
there is no guide as far as i know... a little trick you can do is: whenever you get into a lowlvl mission which is not much worth, or lvl3 even, try and get the other guys to get concorded ;) i got nice ISK out of that, and plenty ppl. things they can free shoot at you like if you flipped their cans ;)
as salvager i use a coercer for 4 cargo expanders and 8 salvage beams (4+4 tractors when i salvage my own stuff)

Glad to see other people in small nimble ships taking wrecks right out from other people's noses.
I usually use a condor with 3 salvagers, a MWD, a cap recharger, and a nanofiber. Zip close to a wreck and salvage - if trouble comes your way GTFO at 3km/s and warp! I like running by gate camps (using the map to see kills in the past hour is handy) and salvaging the wrecks - always aligned for a quick warp out.
My biggest enemy is lag (if I'm on someone else's slower computer that lags). If you keep your wits about you - its highly profitable - especially with T2 wrecks (got 30 mil off a field command ship once).
You can also 'mine' wrecks by going by mining ops in high sec, and salvaging the rat wrecks. I giggle when someone targets me trying to scare me off. __________________________________________________ Sup brosef! Destry's Lounge is looking for a few good drunks - contact me in game.

Remember that destroyers are not race-specific; that is, there is no such thing as "Gallente Destroyer I" as opposed to "Amarr Destroyer I." So select your destroyer based on slots. I'd avoid the Coercer (only 2 mid-slots, which I end up using for AB and cap recharger) and select the Catalyst for salvage work.

I know it would sound a bit hard work for those above in this thread - but try ninja salvaging in lowsec. Try salvaging wrecks of players' ships.
It would give you a nice challenge, as you would be cruising the most dangerous systems in EVE in an unarmed ship with nothing but honour tank on it :)
Here is what you do: - Fit a ninja frig with a) cloaking device (gives you a chance to live through the gatecamp IF you use it correctly), b) cargo scanner, c) as much salvagers and speed mods as you can manage. - Look for a lowsec system with the MOST "ships killed in the last hour" stat. - Warp in and start looking for players' wrecks. Preferably T2 ships(they yield T2 salvage, which can be sold for muchos iskies). - Approach the wreck, scan, decide if it is worth flipping. Salvage anyway. - If anything that is neither pod nor shuttle appears - run like hell.
My biggest "achievement" in this was salvaging a Megathron in infamous Rancer system. The guys in camp obviously turned away for a second and so I lived to tell the tale :)
Just remember - it is not about iskies (if you want iskies, nothing beats missions anyway), it is about outmatching the multimillion SP players in their billion-isk worth ships using smart tactics and the grey matter inside your head.

hurricane with an AB and MWD (AB for deadspace, MWD for people that are salvaging their finished missions)
7 salvagers, 1 recon probe launcher, rest of the medium slots for cap rechargers, 3x cargo expanders, and some nano / inertia stuff.
find a nice mission system (motsu / saila). I used to get 5 or more mission runners per scan
other than that, I will add nothing to this thread. |

Why 7 salvagers? Did you ever get to use all of them at once? I consider myself lucky to find more than 2 wrecks that are within 5k of each other... unless you've just scared the **** out of some guy in his salvaging Comorant who for whatever reason has decided to drag all the wrecks to one place before salvaging them.
Best way to salvage is to join a 0.0 alliance that has access to some good ratting area. Then salvage the belts (most alliance ratting rules will say something like "once you leave a belt whatever you leave behind is fair game for anyone else"). One of the easiest way to gather resources + isk because so many ratters just leave the wrecks (and more often than not the loot too). It's even better if you find a ratter who is chaining a spawn as there will be a dozen or more wrecks there (all of them battleships) and they will usually let you salvage their wrecks if you ask em nicely.
Once you clean out the belts in one system you can move on to one of the other 4 or 5 systems around you that are popular for ratting (but you will be making docking runs every two to three belts in some cases unless you have more than 1000m3 cargo). You can repeat this for hours if you find a popular ratting hole and make a very steady income without the hassle of scanning people down. Instead you can use your mighty scanning skills to scan down folks who your alliance doesn't like that are hiding from the massive armada amassed at the nearest gate.

What would you need a guide for?
Scan down mission. Warp to mission. Salvage wrecks.
Not exactly hard to figure out. ----------------------------- Not an alt. And proud of it.

You can use more than one salvager at a time on a single wreck. So (chance to salvage) * (any mods due to skill or rigs) * (number of salvagers) means you can really speed up your salvaging by targeting a wreck with multiple salvagers at a time.
The typical salvage Destroyer has four tractor beams (pulls the wrecks in from up to 20km away and keeps them close even while you're moving toward the next wreck) and four salvagers . I try to target four nearby wrecks, assign a tractor beam to each, and head toward the next closest wreck; as a wreck comes within range, I set two salvagers on it (and loot if appropriate). If another wreck isn't almost in range, I'll go ahead and set all four salvagers on the one I have in range. This keeps me pretty busy.

Sounds like a lot of work and expenses to no real purpse to me.
9 out of 10 mission runners i know, dont even bother to loot in missions, im pretty sure a request to salavage mission wrecks in local would gain you just as many hits as a scanning probe would.
It's like sneaking through a forrest of aple tree's to steal apples from the farmers garden.
