I apologise if this has already been raised but I couldn't see it on commonly raised issues. I think it would add a great deal more skill/tactics to pvp if people could hide behind asteroids/stations or even other ships.
Seeing my lasers ignoring huge asteroids between me and my target almost seems like a big bug in clipping at the moment! =)

It would be a great improvement in a perfect world, but as I understand it constant LOS calculation during combat would add a vast amount to the work the server needs to do, so it would cause major lag issues in large or even medium sized fights.

Yes it could. But it would be naive to expect players not to cheat.

Then we have to worry about people hacking the client to gain an advantage over others. EVE has been designed to do all calculations of consequence server-side. This was done on purpose to prevent people from developing hacks, like they have done for WoW, EQ, and half a million other games.

A big change, suggested many times(as well as ship collision models), but we can only hope.
I doubt anyone would complain about it too much.

Couldn't they do it predominantly client side with random server side checks

Not easy to validate that someone is actually hacking as opposed to their client simply desyncing from the server. You start banning people for hacking and then they start claiming that their client desync'd and file a lawsuit which CCP would win but would receive bad PR so they don't really want that very much and this is a long run on sentence.

Back when I started playing Eve in 2005, missiles actually did have to fly around stuff to hit their targets... So in a way, it's possible.

Nothing that has any relation to deciding the outcome of any action can be done client-side, simply because it'd be hacked faster that a very fast thing....
The only thing the client can safely do is process information and present it to the player......

How many people will risk their several years old account for such advantage ?
Anyway there are several mechanic how to avoid cheating quite efficiently:
Both sides checking. Both sides checks if there is some obstacle in LOS, If both sides gets different results several actions can be taken. Server will recalculate, of it will be logged.
Periodic updates. With every patch a security measures are applied to client so it wold require a new client hacking. Bit annoying for hackers to hack client every few weeks.

Missiles used to be impact with the actual hitboxes of objects back in 04 (Edge of a ship/station rather than the centre, asteroids, things other than your target, etc) but this was removed for balance reasons.
That being said, I wouldn't mind if it were possible to, say, hide behind an asteroid to avoid fire, but it'd be tricky to implement in a balanced way. ---
